Just thought I'd let everyone with small children know that they aren't your's. Nope. That's what MSNBC says anyway. My gosh! I can't believe that Americans can possibly think this way. But, sadly, Americans voted for this type of thinking. Forget individualism or freedom. Just hand everything over to the government.

Should we lift all public laws that protect our kids from various harms?

Should the right to compusory education be lifted, and make all education private, thus requiring families to pay for their kids' educations?

No. But no one should be telling you that your kids aren't yours either. There is no way I would send a kid to public schools these days. Since the federal government got involved, the schools have gotten worse. This woman was not talking about paying school taxes. We already do that.

She is now saying that she didn't mean it the way it sounded. I call bull on that. This was a scripted commercial, she new exactly what she was saying. I predict that before Obama is out of office, they launch a full scale attack on home schooling. Just wait and see.

Really? Since the Federal Government got involved? They've been involved since before Washington was President. It was very clearly a part of the constitution. So while it's a fun little line of utter nonsense to try and take another shot at the Government and how inept the right would like you to believe it is, it too is nonsense.

How did education relate to her point?

As for schools getting worse, the links below show that student test scores have done nothing but improve over the past 40 years. I, for one, was not even required to take math classes in high school, growing up in Rochester, MN in the early 80's, so I KNOW that kids today are coming out knowing more about math than I did.

Reading scores: Average reading scale score, by age and selected student and school characteristics: Selected years, 1971 through 2008

Math scores: Average mathematics scale score, by age and selected student and school characteristics: Selected years, 1973 through 2008

Her very first sentence was about investing more in public schools. Did you even watch the video? I haven't had time to look at your links b/c I'm about to head to work. I'll look at them later. But a quick question, do they show how we compare to the rest of the world now as compared to the past? It doesn't really matter if scores improve here if they are falling behind the rest of the world. Competition is global now, not just within the U.S.

Yes, I watch the entire video, and why I asked you the question. She's an educator, like myself and like Shane who runs this forum, and ask any educator if they feel a sense of community responsibility for our kids and they will answer an emphatic yes. Education, by it's very nature, helps raise our kids collectively. I can assure you that no one is coming to round them up.

Yes, the U.S. does not fare well with other countries in education, but within our own country, which i showed in the links, our own scores have gone up significantly over the past 40 years. So, no, it isn't getting worse.

I apologize for having to keep hitting and running but I just got off work and heading to the gym. I'm curious as to why we have dropped significantly in global education over the years. You 're a teacher, enlighten me. From where I sit, there can only be two reasons. Either parents aren't doing their jobs and making their kids study or our teachers aren 't teaching as well as they used to. Maybe it's a combination of both. Either way, it doesn't make a compelling argument for good parents to stop thinking their own kids are their own responsibility. In fact, it drives home that point even more.

If their are other reasons our education system is failing globally, please tell me what they are. And I really hope you aren't just going to bring up money b/c that gets into taxpayer pensions and healthcare and I really don't want to rehash that debate.

Again, sorry about my limited time to post links to our global education.

I, nor anyone else has the easy answer to this question, but I can tell you this much: like wrestling, other countries are catching up to the best.

This weekend is the Master's golf tournament, and you see that in golf more than any other thing.
