FWIW, Easter for us is coloring eggs, hiding them, a Easter Basket, a gnarly sugar rush, and a headache on the sugar crash.
I am 49, bald, ugly, and don't own a single cool thing. Kids like me though.

My daughter came home early today for the annual family Easter Brunch on Sunday. Why ? She wanted to dye the eggs for Easter and decorate an Easter basket. Some kids never grow up.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Christ's message was pretty simple. Do unto other as you would have them do unto you. Period.

If you have to "study the Bible" on a regular basis, then you're missing the big picture, IMO.
Actually, He did give His followers authority which included writing down Holy Writ. The 3 different accounts are only 3 different perspectives that do not contradict, only enhanse each other. You wouldn't want or expect "final authority" to be something passed down by word of mouth would you?

Translate, retranslatte is a bogus statement. You need to study, re-study so that you don't make foolish statements like this.

"pour over every word"? Well, yes. We are to study God's Word. Man shall not live by bread alone........

Christ's message was pretty simple. Do unto other as you would have them do unto you. Period.

That is not His message. His message was to repent and believe in Him as the Messiah or perish.

If you don't study the Bible, you don't know what the "Big Picture" is.

He told those present to love each other and model their lives after his own. He also blessed bread and wine and explained that this ritual would bring people closer to God.

Well, at least this is the simplistic way that I understand it.

Anyway, what I find most interesting is what he did NOT say or do.

He did not tell his followers to write three different accounts of his life and then bundle it up with 20+ other books, translate and re-translate and then tell people to pour over every word of it and live their lives by it.

How would you known what he told them except it be written down? Word of mouth would have died out by now.

He also told them this at the Last Supper: 14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

He actually did not tell them to do unto others. He told them to love one another as I have loved you.

Prime example of the way I try to live my life: If I see someone headed into a burning house, I am going to try to keep them out.

Easter is as nice a fairy-tale tale story as the rest of them.

Most Christians seem to not know that most of the Holidays celebrated by Christians (including Easter) are actually Pagan holidays converted to Christian ones.

Here is a link that goes into this in great detail - http://www.goodnewsaboutgod.com/studies/holidays2.htm
If we don't fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them.

GnP, I'd say that the written accounts of Christ's lives and some of the other scriptural writings give pretty good examples and guidelines for loving each other. I do think that many Christians over-emphasize the Bible and under-emphasize the Christ-like actions.

I'd also say that while "do unto others" was a huge and vital part of Christ's moral teaching, that wasn't the only important thing.

Do unto others is chinese -predates jesus-of course ALL major christan holidays were scheduled during the soltice's and other important Pagan holidays -kinda ''join us or die type thing ''-much like the Cathar Heresy when the cathars chose to walk into a pyre rather than give up their beliefs .
you must remember the only people who could read and write were monks and scribes -Politics and Religion -and male -why do you think in every religion or belief system a woman caused all the troubles of the worls -from Pandora to Eve ? Because women were third class citizens .

    Spider's take on the Bible:

Old Testament: Written by men who may or may not have believed that they were inspired by God. Stories were not meant to be taken literally, but meant to teach life lessons.

New Testament: (full disclosure - I have not read it, but am famailiar with much of it's content) My take - Similar to OT except that it is more of a historical account, which is colored by people's interpretation of events rather than being an objective reporting of them.

In either case, the Bible is not the word of God and is not to be taken literally, but does offer many good lessons regarding how we should live - if you can sort through the other stuff.

I am well aware of the paganism that runs with Easter and Christmas. I do not celebrate either one of them. I am fully convinced that the ressurrection is a fact. I dare not go up against the powerful evidence.
