Should the state mandate drug testing for those receiving welfare benefits?

    Discuss.

This is a tough question answer. I am torn in my thinking. I look forward to reading peoples opinions.

Why don't you first give us some numbers on how many people are receiving welfare and how much aid they are receiving?

Really doesn't make sense to pour endless amounts of $ into testing if the costs outweigh the benefits.

I will say yes, and if tested positive they must enter a rehab program as a condition of continued benefits until they reach a given number of negative tests.

I'm not thinking cost-benefit here, but maybe a drug free individual will be more likely to get off of welfare.

First, let's define welfare so we don't fall into the trap of lumping a whole lot of people into a flawed group, as the question implies, and is usually implied when someone mentions welfare. Food stamps? Aid to the Needy and Disabled? (Don't quote me, but Colorado gives about a whopping $225 a month to these people)?, WIC (for babies)?, Tax breaks to new home owners? Tax breaks to Wal-Mart? Unemployment benefits?

I'm not in favor of this for any of these programs. We generally give benefit assistance to people because they need it and so they aren't a burden on communities, not to discourage drug use. In fact, I'm not aware of a single program where we give people money not to take drugs. It is probably true that many people who collect Aid to the Needy and Disabled program described above are alcohol and drug abusers (are we going to test for alcohol as well?) but withholding subsistence level benefits is unlikely to change their habits. What they need is not a kick to the curb, but treatment.

    Makes sense.

Maybe all the CEO's who got bail-out money also should be subjected to the same drug tests.

I think it is an unrealistic scenario to deny Americans welfare. Right or wrong, we as a nation are much too civilized to stomach the amount homelessness and poverty that we would see in our streets if we cut off government support for those who use drugs.

Did you see The Amazing Race where the American reality show contestants we brought to tears after traveling trough India? Americans could not step over the sick and homeless on their way to the supermarket. This goes double for children in poverty.

    It will never happen.

I wish I had better solution to stop the drug use that plagues our country, but I don't think this idea will fly.

If anything we are moving toward more welfare, not less.

    They should be tested.

I dont view unemployment as welfare. It is limited and it is earned, you pay into it by working. You always try to lump good hard working people in with those who may be good but for some reason dont work and collect.

Most companies require drug tests, I dont see why we cant test those who are getting government money for doing nothing. Like Spider said get them treatment and hopefully they will succeed and not need the welfare anymore.
