    money for doing nothing.

You mean, like raising a family? It's popular to express negative views about people we don't really know.

Also, I know that no one on this board has ever used drugs, or been unemployed, or got any benefit from the government that that wasn't absolutely justified.

I am sure ther are and I would say drug test them. I would have no problem taking a drug test. If you are a mother recieving government help it should be no problem for you to take a drug test. If you dont like it then do the things you need to do to change your life.

Why is it you seem to want to keep people on welfare and dont think they can get off of it? People can work and achieve, not to the same level as others but enough to do it on there own without the government.

Is alcohol one of the drugs they are testing for? It's the one that causes the most problems afterall.

I say make it mandatory for anyone receiving welfare--wic, health care, housing, food stamps etc. I really like Spider's idea of a mandatory treatment plan the first positive test and have a LIMITED number of times that you can test positive before you lost your benefits. I don't see how this could be a bad idea. If you can't afford to take care of your own family then you don't have the discretionary money to be buying illegal and illicit drugs. I would also not have a problem tying benefits to "keeping your nose clean", i.e. you get caught vandalizing, shoplifting, or a DUI then you would face consequences and the possibility of losing benefits.

I would also add that there should be an element of education added to it. Whether it is how to cook on a budget or how to build a resume. The classes should rotate so that the longer you are on welfare the more tools and education you receive.

Does your idea include alcohol? Or doesn't that count (even though it is the worst offender by far) because it is "legal"?

I would say yes if there were a good way to test for alcohol after it has been consumed. I agree with snackem if you are in the position to need the help then you dont have the ability to afford those other things like drugs or alcohol.

    Absolutely NO.

This is a prime example of a invasion of privacy and a unwarranted search.

If the goal is to help poor people be free of drugs then a better solution would be to offer free drug counseling and treatment programs.

This is a good example of accountability. If people need the help then abide by the rules to recieve the help.
