You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.
That is a good question, but you don't know if you are getting the actual surgery or the "placebo" surgery; they're called double blind studies.
However, and as Spider pointed out, your medical treatment is (1) entirely paid for and (2) you receive compensation for being a subject in the research.
So, if you got the real treatment, you got it for free and got paid. If you got the "placebo" treatment, you got paid, but also likely recovered from your injuries as well, as the segment pointed out.
A case in point: my brother took part in the Mayo Clinic's initial pilot studies of the Nicotine patch. A placebo was used, as well as the real patch. For him, he quit smoking from the patch, and, to this day, does not know if he received the real patch or the placebo. If it was the placebo, it worked fine!
