Default Blackwater charged with tax evasion

Currently under appeal. The old employee as independent contractor trick--meaning the co. doesn't withhold taxes (p.s. this is unrelated to the we-are-not-subject-to-any-laws-in-Iraq-trick). The story doesn't mention it, but I know I've read in several places that Blackwater trains its, uh, independent contractors--which sounds a lot like employee to me.

Some journalist who's written a book about Blackwater was on Bill Moyers show last Friday and he was scathing in his criticism of the company.

Blackwater is the poster child, but my concern all along has been the privatization of what seems like a very public function (national security)--which raises a lot of issues, including accountability, and how much it's costing us. Apparently there are over a hundred private security firms operating in Iraq (I believe that's what I heard).

No wonder unemployment in America is so low.

Big, have you seen the film Battleship Potemkin by Eisenstein? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015648/. I watched most of it last night. It's supposed to be a pretty famous one.

    "Blackwater charged with tax evasion"

It worked against Capone. If you can't get'em for the serious stuff, sic the IRS on'em.

I heard the journalist interviewed by Terri Gross, months back, and posted about it then, if you remember. He's the one that provided those exorbitant dollar figures that the taxpayers are footing.

Yes, I remember you posting on this topic before--in part why I thought there might be some interest in it.

I saw it a long time ago in Russia. Of course in Soviet Union there was either a revolutionary or a WWII movie on TV almost every week. Perhaps this film was more famous abroad than in Russia.

Also, in Soviet Union there was much more respect given to movies about events during the Russian Revolution, the Civil war and WWII. Soviets were not interested as much in movies where the working man actually failed in the end as it happened in 1905.

matclone, the events in 1905 actually were a consequence of Japanese victory over Russian Navy during the 1905 dispute.

I missed this particular part, but here's apparently a famous scene in Potemkin, after the slaughter on the steps of Odessa, where a giant wakes up--and this is supposed to represent the consiousness of the people rising up.

Early in the film, the sailors are complaining about the bad meat, and one of them says that Japan feeds its prisoners better then they were getting on ship--apparently a reference to the event you speak of.

It was true though, the Tzar was a brutal dictator who did not care if his men shot and killed anyone who rebelled even if they were women and children. I am glad he and his family eventually got the axe. He really tasted his own medicine. In 1905 alone thousands of people were massacred simply for protesting outside his palace.
