Default Michigan woman receiving food stamps after winning 1,000,000 lottery

    ]winning $1 million lottery

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – 1 hr 39 mins ago

Amanda Clayton (Local4)People love stories about someone winning the lottery and then giving the money away. They're less likely to feel fondly about Amanda Clayton, who won $1 million in the Michigan State Lottery but is still collecting food stamps.
"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, 24, told Local 4 news in Detroit.
Back in December, a woman in Washington State fell under scrutiny when it was revealed she was receiving state economic benefits even though she lives in a $1 million waterfront home on Lake Washington.
Clayton, who says she owns two homes and a new car, receives $200 a month in food assistance from the state-issued Michigan Bridge Card, which is meant to benefit lower-income residents in the nation's eigth most economically depressed state.
Twenty-five percent of Michigan's residents receive some form of food assistance from the state. The state's unemployment rate is 9.3 percent, more than a full point above the national average, but has dropped from a 10.4 percent peak in August.
And Clayton isn't embarrassed about living off the state even though she now finds herself in the nation's top tax bracket. "I mean I kinda do," Clayton told Local 4 when asked if she had a "right" to the government welfare.
She certainly doesn't the fit the mold of other lottery winners we have told you about here at the Sideshow, including the number of repeat winners of the Georgia State Lottery, many of whom chose to donate their initial winnings to charity or family members in need.
Clayton downplayed her wealth, saying she took the $1 million in a lump sump, which meant about half immediately went to taxes. "I feel that it's OK because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay," she said. "I have two houses."

Her story has already caught attention locally, where state Republican Rep. Dale Zorn has sponsored a bill preventing individuals like Clayton from taking state financial assistance.
"Public assistance should be given to those who are in need of public assistance, not those who have found riches," Zorn told Local 4. The bill, which has already passed the state House and has a sister bill in the Senate, would require the state to cross check the names of lottery winners over $1,000 to see if they are also receiving state financial benefits.

I think about blowing my head off every other day as I am useless and contribute nothing to society . I turned down heat assistance as I thought others could use it more .This creature makes me ill.

This actually is just another perfect example of the utter incompetence of government. Why in the heck do people want these morons gaining more control of our lives when they can't even do what they're supposed to do now? I can guarantee you that someone snatched up her taxes as soon as they could, why can't they pass the message on down the road to the other government failure and tell them to cut off her food stamps? It's probably because there is waaay to much bureaucracy to keep track of this stuff.

But yeah, the chick should have said something. But you also have to remember, liberals will tell you that welfare is not being taken advantage of, so.......

So one example proves your point?
I consider myself a Liberal and I am sure that there is fraud in that system. Examples of outrageous behavoir can be found everywhere, but they don't prove anything.

Well, using your logic, if outrageous behavior doesn't prove anything, then neither does normal behavior. Where does that get us? That is the problem with liberals,IMO. You all over look these type of situations. Then, people notice that you are overlooking it and they do it. Then so do others and others and others.....and then it is supposed to be the accepted norm just because "everyone" is doing it.

If the government were a well oiled machine, these things wouldn't happen. But it isn't and it's happening all over the place. But some want us to give these miserable failures more money. It's mind boggling. If the government worked and spent our money well, we wouldn't have 15trillion dollars of debt.

Ridiculous... pointing out outrageous examples proves nothing. They always be exceptions and they wil always be people holding these examples up as absolute proof that there is rampant corruption and ineffiencies.
I am sure there is fraud, but I will not jump to any conclusions without seeing some reasonable statistics about the program as a whole.

Both parties have done the statistics and both have come to the conclusion that there are BILLIONS of dollars being wasted in government. That is my point. Why give them more when they don't spend the money they already have in a responsible way.

Of course there is waste everywhere, nothing is 100% efficient.
I am sure there are billions of dollars wasted by the government.
But you use a specific example as evidence that there is a huge amount of waste in giving people food stamps.
I feel confident that this woman is a very rare exception and most people who receive food stamps are not abusing the system.

Actually ODH, I went off subject. The thread was started by Payton who was pissed at the chick for accepting the money. I was pointing out that it is just one in a number of failures by our government. I was not trying to use this example as a reason for people getting or deserving food stamps. Believe me, there are many more and better examples of waste in that one section of government that I would have used to back my side of the debate if I were trying to do that. I just find it funny that something like that could happen when the story clearly says that the government took her tax dollars already. So why not cut her off the food stamps then and there? The reason is because our government is inefficient and it probably "wasn't their job". The whole "it's not my job" line is exactly what makes public companies inefficient and our government is no different.
