Believe me, there are many more and better examples of waste in that one section of government that I would have used to back my side of the debate if I were trying to do that. I just find it funny that something like that could happen when the story clearly says that the government took her tax dollars already. So why not cut her off the food stamps then and there? The reason is because our government is inefficient and it probably "wasn't their job". The whole "it's not my job" line is exactly what makes public companies inefficient and our government is no different.
Just curious what you mean by public companies?
In my experience any organization that gets even moderately large will without exception have huge inefficiencies in it. This includes well run publicaly and privately own companies that I have worked for.

That was a typo. I meant private companies. And I agree with you that they all have inefficiencies. Most of that stems from one person on one side of the business who is too lazy to do something that may not fit inside their exact job description. Those are the people who run a business into the ground but don't get fired because they are technically doing exactly what they are supposed to. It would have taken maybe 1 minute to shoot an email to the food stamp department and tell them about this woman. But whoever it was collecting the taxes would have spent 1 minute doing something that "wasn't my job". And we all know that the world ends when someone does that.

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan woman who continued to get food stamps after winning a $1 million lottery jackpot was arraigned Tuesday on welfare fraud charges.
Amanda Clayton, 25, of Lincoln Park was arrested on Monday. If convicted of the two felony charges, she could face up to four years in prison.
"It's simply common sense that million dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance," Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement Tuesday. "We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to uphold state laws intended to ensure wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars."
Clayton stood silently during her arraignment at Lincoln Park's 25th District Court. Defense lawyer Stanley Wise said he hopes to have charges dismissed at her next court hearing April 24. He didn't elaborate.
"She's upset but she'll be fine," Wise said.
Clayton chose a $700,000 lump sum, before taxes, last fall after winning the jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" a Michigan lottery game show.
The case came to light last month. She told Detroit TV station WDIV at the time that she thought it might have been OK to keep using food stamps because she wasn't working.
The state Department of Human Services has said it was Clayton's responsibility to report her dramatic change in wealth within 10 days. She was dropped from the food program.
Clayton wasn't the first Michigan lottery winner to keep public benefits. Last spring, a TV station reported that Leroy Fick, 60, of Bay County, was using the food program despite winning an $850,000 lump sum prize in 2010. He told state officials about his wealth but was allowed to temporarily keep his card because lump-sum windfalls at that time were not counted as regular income under the program.
The state has since banned anyone with assets of more than $5,000, excluding a car, from the food stamp program. That ban knocked Fick off the rolls.

So, in order to qualify for food stamps you need to (1) have minimal to zero income and (2) have minimal to no money in the bank? She should still be able to qualify for unemployment, right?

In my case -I MUST have a checking ACCT.-with not enough income to pay rent , utilities , or medical bills of ANY type .The reason I must have a checking acct. is the amazing amount of welfare and food stamp fraud.
This year I received a $22 a month raise on disability and then had my food stamps cut $35 a month.Whomever is in charge may as well round up all disabled people and kill us since Reagan shut down all the MH facilities. I may be a little harder to kill than most.
Indiana passed a law where AFTER you've stood trial , been found competent to stand trial and done your time , they can then commit you indefinitely !!
Those of you who know me from this site know I've sworn never to be handcuffed again-and I swear on my nephews life THAT holds true .
