Default Capitalism , Democracy adn all of its foundations are based on fairy tales

Speaking at a symposium of Nobel laureates and other leading scientists, Merkel insisted that only by establishing limits on carbon dioxide output per individual around the world -- suggesting about 2 tons per head -- could the fight to stop global warming be effective.

''Our long-term goal can only be the assimilation of worldwide per capita emissions,'' Merkel told the conference.

Her suggestion would mean drastic cuts: Germany currently has a carbon dioxide output of some 11 tons per person per year, while the U.S. is at around 20 tons per person.

Flannery said that the recent economic boom in China and India has helped to accelerate the levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but strong growth in the developed world has also exacerbated the problem.

''It's a worldwide issue. We've had growing economies everywhere, we're still basing that economic activity on fossil fuels,'' he said. ''The metabolism of that economy is now on a collision course clearly with the metabolism of our planet.''

All your prosperity is harmful to this planet. What happened to the times when people chopped wood to heat themselves?

Germany's president, Merkel, is obviously fooled by Al Gore and other leftists. There is no global warming problem.

They just want to punish the U.S.!

Among other things, it wasn't very profitable for the middle man. The middle man is working with water, not wood, these days.

How does the subject matter of this thread relate to it's title?

Matclone, if you wanted to write a one sentence summary about the relationship between fossil fuels and growing economies, with said relationship seemingly independent of the concept of democracy (Ie-Hitler probably was responsible for a lot of carbon dioxide emissions), how would you do it (ie-for the history books)?

You have to be kidding me Steve. There was no pollution of the planet problem during Hitler's times. This environmental problem is the problem of today and America is the leader. Have you read the article?

I don't read links (for the upteenth time--they freeze my computer too often).

So, perhaps, if you can be so kind, please explain the notion of "a problem of today" vis-a-vis "foundations are based on..." (which sounds historical) and how democracy relates to carbon dioxide emissions, or how a lack of democracy would make a difference in emissions?

    Thank you, in advance.

"There was no pollution of the planet problem during Hitler's times."

I'll bet there were some off-color housing in the Ruhr Valley during those times. Tell those owners they didn't really have a pollution problem.

Having realized the finite nature of gold, and having discovered the much greater usefulness of fossil fuels, power brokers of the world turned to oil as the commodity of choice.

Easy. The foundation of capitalism and democracy is more is better. the foundation of democracy is to respect people's desires. At some point this logic crossed the line and it is now destroying this planet. Oil was found to be the best energy source to give more and to prosper. Oil is causing pollution.

In other less democratic and less capitalistic countries people's wishes are less important and oil is used less.

Bottom line is today's capitalistic prosperity is destroying our environment.
