On the subject of global warming, I would submit to you that today's human activities are doing less to raise atmospheric CO2 than past events. The two largest increases of atmospheric CO2 occurred during the increase in tilled farmland in the US Great Plains in the early 1800s and the increase in tilled farmland in the USSR in the early 1900s. The increased aeration of the soil in these ecosystems allowed the natural soil microorganisms to thrive and give off tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide.

Just like people aren't only black and white, ecology is not only black and white.

I'm confused by your mix of the concepts of capitalism and democracy, Big. I think they are really two separate ideas, no matter what George Bush says. You can have capitalism (a type of economic system) with or without democracy (rule by the people). Conversely you can have democracy with capitalism (or rather, a mixed economy)--like the U.S. or you can have democracy with socialism (or rather, a mixed economy)--like Sweden.

I would expect a capitalistic country today to use more oil--democracy or not.

How does capitalism exist without democracy? Big business expects voters to vote people in that will allow big business to exploit resources around the World to the fullest.

If there is a dictator, how do businesses pull his strings?

Milton Friedman wrote a book called "Capitalism and Freedom" that analyzes your questions in full. I expect that you believe Friedman to be a capitalist puppet, so I won't hold my breath waiting for you put down your copy of Pravda to buy it.

What do you call Saudi Arabia if not capitalist?

If I were king, I could say: You businessmen do what you gotta do, just so long as you pay me a tithe. If you want them to eat cake, let them eat cake.

Maybe I'm missing some salient point. Capitalism is an economic system. Democracy is a political system. They are not the same thing.

Saudi Arabia by itself is not capitalist. Their oil belongs to the king and without America and the West they would hardly sell an ounce of it. Saudi Arabia is an evil extention of America.

    Interesting.

    How about this?:

"One consequence of the industrial revolution, dependency on oil, became, more and more, a feature of even the most underdeveloped countries, causing alarms to be raised about the damage, permanent and irreversible, done by the by-products of fossile fuels, to the Earth's ecosystems."

Since I said one sentence, I'm stuck with this run-on monstrosity.
