WASHINGTON (AP) -- In one of the longest-held secrets of the Cold War, the U.S. Army explored the potential for using radioactive poisons to assassinate ''important individuals'' such as military or civilian leaders, according to newly declassified documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Approved at the highest levels of the Army in 1948, the effort was a well-hidden part of the military's pursuit of a ''new concept of warfare'' using radioactive materials from atomic bombmaking to contaminate swaths of enemy land or to target military bases, factories or troop formations.

Not the same as nuking school kids who are hiding under their desks, but I don't think there was a moral high ground in the cold war.

A really scary thought to think America was considering poisoning people. America, the same country that attacked Iraq on the same pretenses.

Is that like the umbrella injected poison ball that the KGB did develop and use for decades? As I recall wasn't it just a few years ago that it was used sucessfully again on someone in the UK?

It very well might have been a British or American assassin that killed that guy in England to discredit Russian administration.

Let me say it again, Soviet Union never considered assassinating important leaders with poison or poisoning foreign factory workers or important civilians unprovoked. Hardcore, those were Western chemical weapons Saddam used, not Soviet.

Big, both sides kept raising the stakes for decades. To try and paint one side as being the bad guy while giving the other a free ride is disingenious at best.
