I tend to agree with a sort of notion that Earth's environment and resources are sacred, limited, and should be used sparingly and cautiously. I realize this way of thinking smacks against Christian beliefs that a man's desire is sacred and a man should be free to get as much as he wants. In other words, human desires trump the inferior Earth resources under God.

This kind of thinking is very destructive and in the end will rape our environment and leave us in big trouble economically with no way back.

The huge gas guzzlers, an ever expanding desire to buy bigger houses, to fly often and to desire more goods will all lead to more scarce resources as well as make them more expensive. Mark my word. God is not great. Human desires are not the most important.

Did I miss that part of the Bible? While I'm not a Christian, it is my understanding that Christians encourage self control rather than a carte blanche license to fulfill all desires at any cost. The consequences of any act must be weighed against the benefits.

    Spider,

That is the way most people interpret the bible. Humans are sacred. Its in the bible. From that the interpretations begin. This is a Christian Nation Spider. Communism is always weighed against the actions of communists. Lets be fair and do the same with Christians.

I just hate to see articles like this one. "We didn't know it will get this bad. What can we do now? What will happen from here?"

Oil prices, an economic scourge in decades past, have soared to record levels in recent years. But the fallout often seemed negligible: Americans kept spending; employment kept growing; factories, construction crews and retail stores stayed busy.

I agree that greed and personal interests have caused us to squander our resources, I just don't think it's a Christian thing. Capitalist? Well that's another issue.

I seriously doubt that most people (or Christians) interpret the bible as saying that man can and should do whatever he pleases because his desires trump everything else. If you can find even a fringe group that professes that belief, much less "most" people, please let me know or find some info on them, I would really like to check it out.

Big once again you have made a statement that has no evidence to back it up. It says in the Bible for Christians to be humble and frugal and to cherish the gifts of God. All you have to do is read exodus to see this. God told the people to only take as much manna as they would eat that day and to not horde any of it. This was for two reasons one to trust God that he would provide and two to teach them to only use what they needed and not be glutiness.

I think there is a section of Christianity that asserts God gave man the world to abuse as they choose by quoting the verse in Genesis that says that man is to have dominion over the earth and the animals.

But it's not fair to say that all Christians are anti-environment. There are some churches and many individuals that believe in preserving resources of the earth.

You can make the Bible stand for a lot of things, but I sense Big's talking about this idea amongst many (but certainly not all) Christians that they should acquire wealth. I think it's a common views amongst many Christians. The signs are all over the place. There is the parable of the talents (money) and how the son who made the most of his talents was the most cherished in the eyes of God. I can't think of any biblical stories about the environment although there is probably something. But think, thousands of years ago, (Biblical times), people weren't messing up the planet too much.
