Sully, ask your parents how they proved who you were and where you lived. There had to be a birth certificate and your parents probably had to have an ID proving that they were your parents. I know we had to have all of that. So, yes there had to be a government issued ID to enroll in school.

I got a duplicate copy of my birth certificate for $8 and I forget about my SS but it wasn't anymore that that. I want to say $5 or $6 but not over $10.

You are right, American people are guaranteed the right to vote by our constitution, so what's wrong with making sure they are the people with that right? Canadians look an awful lot like Americans and they even speak english. What is stopping them from crossing the border and casting an illegal vote if they don't have to have an ID? I'm not trying to block anyone from voting, just saying an ID is not that big of a deal to get.

Yes, people can get fake IDs, but if these irresponsible people are too lazy to get a real ID, what makes you think they will go through a much tougher process and get a fake ID?

And I do have one last question. Are felons allowed to vote? I thought I heard they weren't but I'm not sure. But if they aren't then that is another group of people that could commit fraud. If they are, then disregard that.

Voting rights of Felons vary from state to state.

This is mostly a politcial act as there is no hint of proof of any type of wide spread voter fraud.

A birth certificate is not an ID, neither is a SS card. My parents probably had to prove where they lived (I assume they used their DL's but I don't know if some other proof like utility statements would have worked) but they didn't have to prove who I was as there was not way to prove who I was.

The problem comes when someone who has the right to vote is prevented from voting by the laws which are intended to prevent people who don't have the right from voting. If there were a perfect system nobody would have a problem with it. You can either accept that some people who shouldn't be allowed to vote are going to, or that some people who should be allowed to vote are going to be prevented from doing so. I fall on the side where makeing sure that everyone who has the right gets to exercise it is more important than making sure some people who don't have the right don't get to.

    ODH ,
you are correct about voting laws for felons differing from state to state-Indiana allows felons the right to vote but makes it dam near impossible to get an ID. i.e.-to get a driver's liscense you need 6 pieces of info-address , birth certificate, utility bills,etc.-the average felon will have a great deal of trouble obtaining all this and IF they cannot get a drivers liscense they give you an ID card w/out a picture ? Talk about useless. Most banks will NOT cash the check they give you on the way out-( the money from your personnal acct. as GATE pay is a thing of the past) so most guys cannot cash their $2.50 check using their prison ID .
The star recently ran an article on how hard it is for a felon to reintegrate into society and I was kind of shocked at how difficult it is to get legit ID.
You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.
