Gorbachev also allowed these new stores where all the goods like electronics and clothes from other countries would be sold. The problem was that those goods cost so much that people could not afford them. After walking by these stores and seeing all these goods that they could not buy people wanted the end to Soviet Union. Why would you make such stores? Nothing was being sold and the stores made people angry.

Just think about it. Regular Soviet would make 150 to 200 rubles per month. Those stores sold sneakers that cost 600 rubles. Why have such stores other than make people angry?

The subsidies did not run out. After people saw these stores (there were a few right by my house) they wanted those products but could not buy them. Gorbachev said in the West they make these products by having private companies. That is what we will do. Overnight he wanted to make changes. What happened in the end? Most companies could not do it of course because the equipment, the skills and the system were lacking. Gorbachev thought that Soviet companies would start making goods equal to the West. In reality all companies fell apart and now oil is the main revenue.

On top of that, many goods that were made in Soviet Union were not bad. The factory where my father worked made tennis balls among other things for example. The fishing rods in Soviet Union were as good as any I have seen here in America. However, Western companies refused to buy these goods from Soviet Union until it renounced communism. This way it was impossible to earn dollars and other currency.

Maybe it had something to do with the fear of Soviet nukes?

China is no real threat, not like Soviet Union was. China is simply being exploited. The labor over there is 10 times cheaper than in Soviet Union.
