Default UAW needs to make concessions

If the UAW does no t make the pay and benefits concessions put forth by congress I dont see how the auto makers can survive. Even if they get the bailout money it will only be a temporary fix, because they would not have fixed a serious issue. With the American auto companies paying almost double in labor costs compared to what Toyota pays its American work force, the American companies can not compete. The sales are there, the quality is getting better and hopefully with restructuring and limits on CEO and other golden parachute plans they can survive. But if the UAW does not concede they will have committed suicide, because the jobs wont be there. Making 25-30 an hour at a job is better than making 0 with no job. The UAW needs to eliminate the jobs bank where, laid off employees make full pay without working, they need to lower wages and retirement benefits for those working now. If they dont and the Companies go bankrupt a judge will make this decision for them. A judge will decide what is fair compensation for their skill, which they really dont have a skill like the old timers did. Nobody wants to see the big three fail but if the Union can not see beyond its own greed they will.

I'm glad AIG employees did not have to make any concessions. I'm glad Reagan is dead and worm food.I think we should secede from the south.

The AIG employees are not overpaid making the company struggle. With AIG the management needed to make serious concessions and so do the Auto maker CEO's and management. If the UAW does not concede on pay and benefits the big three will go under with or without the bailout. Lets see how far the Union gets with no auto makers and with the Japanese companies unwilling to play ball.

I just read this today. Something to think about.

Here's something else to think about: Ford has spent the last thirty
years moving all its factories out of the US, claiming they can't make
    money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants
inside the US. The last quarter's results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in
    losses.

Good post ban. It is important to note that the fact is Ford, GMC and Chrystler pay double in hourly pay/benefits than do the Japanese companies. The Union is not the only problem but a major one that the Big three are facing.

Just with one quick google search, these articles seem to suggest that Toyota is paying its American workers more than the Big 3 are.

"Hourly wages for UAW workers at GM factories are about equal to those paid by Toyota Motor at its older U.S. factories, according to the companies. GM says the average UAW laborer makes $29.78 per hour, while Toyota says it pays about $30 per hour. But the unionized factories have far higher benefit costs.

GM says its total hourly labor costs are now $69, including wages, pensions and health care for active workers, plus the pension and health care costs of more than 432,000 retirees and spouses. Toyota says its total costs are around $48. The Japanese automaker has far fewer retirees and its pension and health care benefits are not as rich as those paid to UAW workers."

Forgive me for my ignorance, but why do pensions exist? Was the pension plan started in place of a pay raise, or just a way to grow government, or can't people save on their own for retirement??? Frankly I don't know... Someone enlighten me.

I don't have anything against a pension. If the company can afford to keep up with the pension program fine. It would seem to me that those who take work for a pension have sold their labor and skill for security in retirement. This to me seems to be capitalism.
