All those things are critical to their success. In addition, they weren't held back because of the color of their skin or because they were born to the wrong parents. Your Horatio Alger myth takes all that for granted, but it's not a reality for a lot of people.

Secondly, of all those factors you mockingly throw at me, only one may be appropriate, or at least a Marxist would say so: other people helped them make their fortune.

I don't take anything away from any of the rich people. Obviously, they worked very hard for it. The problem is, you're implicitly purporting that those who aren't wealthy haven't worked hard enough--which is a grossly over-simplified story about life and success.
I can't speak for Ugly, but I don't think that he is making a judgment about the work ethic of those who are not rich. Those who are not rich just haven't done what is necessary to get rich -- whatever that may be. Wealth is not a luck scenario -- it doesn't come on its own and it doesn't leave on its own. I could be the hardest worker in the world, but if all I did was pick up trash on the side of the road, I may never get rich.

But, in this country, we are all free to do as we wish. Some people see what it takes to get rich and decide that what they would give up is worth more than what they would get.

But, those who made the Forbes list are some cool people.

Clone I never proposed a single thing that had to do woth work ethic in any way positive or negative as it applies to un-wealthy people.

Sure you did. That's the logical implication of your lauding the so-called self-made man and telling Big "It's almost all self-made". It's clearly part of the story. On another thread, you commented that Russians or people in former communist countries are "on their own" to fend for themselves. Again, effort is implicated.

    Clone,

You're inserting words into people's posts that are not there. You are applying your own prejudices to Ugly's statements and drawing conclusions that are not logical. I don't think Ugly has any sort of agenda against the un-wealthy and I don't think that he is saying that un-wealthy people are any less hard-working than welathy people. I think he is saying that those wealthy folks on the Forbes list are definitely hard-working people and that their work ethic is the primary factor responsible for their success. That does NOT mean that anyone unlike them is not hard-working.

Skipster is exactly right. Clone my only intention with this thread is to rebuke Bigs claim that the wealthy in this nation inherited it all. That is it there is nothing that follows that. I think that I have always been very clear with my posts and threads and heve never tried to hide anything in them that I wasnt just flat out saying.

I response to your comment about the Russians and such, I do believe they are on there own to make it and mostly because of the choices the leadership of that country have made. I also have been very clear that I believe people can help themselves and that nobody should lean on someone else to build them up if they are of able body and mind to stand on their own two feet. That s not to say people dont have set backs or shouldnt help one another but we should not become a welfare state creating a population of dependents.
