Thread: If You could....

    Default If You could....

talk to Sgallan or Spider and talk about Atheism, what would you like to talk to them about. Just so you know, one week from today, on September 19, I am going to have them on of all things, a talk radio program, (with a positive Christian flavor) talking about Atheism and the issues they have had with Christianity. More to come later, but what would you like to ask them regarding their belief system and for those who know me, realize it has to be respectful.

I would ask if they believe in souls or not and about the relationship between their position on this topic and their atheism.

I'll give you an answer. I believe that there is something special about life and that living things are very different from inanimate objects, but I don't believe that a soul exists. By "soul," I mean an entity which is distinct from the body that we inhabit and which may or may not live on after our physical body dies and disintegrates. I do not believe in any form of immortality, heaven or hell, or afterlife other than the effect we have on our survivors and their memories of us, the works we leave behind us, and our DNA living on in our children.

Thanks spider. I am trying to find someone who went straight from no souls to atheism, instead of what I think is the normal trend of rejecting Christianity, then god, the souls.

In my case, religion never really made sense to me. I was raised Jewish and went to Hebrew School, had a Bar Mitzvah, the whole nine yards. Even as a young kid, it seemed wrong to me that prayers in services were always words that someone else had written. I felt that the only meaningful prayers would be my own true thoughts, but if God were really omniscient, He would know what was in my heart and there would be no reason to pray in the first place. It also seemed odd to me that God was depicted as having human characteristics - anger, love, vengeance, etc. If God existed, He should be beyond all that.

Too many inconsistencies for my pragmatic and empirical mind to swallow - hence the atheism. Still, I don't claim to know "the truth," and would be thrilled to die and find myself in the company of lost loved ones . . . but I'm not holding my breath.

Call it a "preview". Media does it all the time to titillate their audiences, and remind them to tune in.
