As conservative as I am I think that a couple of things happened this year.
    1. A lof of the people that showed up in 2008 to vote for Obama and also voted democrat didn't come out to vote this year.
    2. There was a shift to the right--though not as large as it appeares.
    3. Most importantly there is a HUGE anti-incumbency feeling.

Jensen also has a very good point.

I think there were a few things coming out:

    1. Correction of the Democratic wins in 2006. Dems won many seats in historically Republican territory.
    2. Economy. This is beyond obvious. The economy is bad and the part in power gets the blame.
    3. This was a shift to the right and I agree with Snackem that it is not as large as it appears. The right has done a better job of getting their message (and, of course, with the jobs situation they have a better message. The Dems only message is please wait and things will get better).
I also feel the media (both leftleaning and right-leaning) has over-reported the voter anger angle.

If this was just an anti-incumbent phenomena ban (as your article suggests), then why were all the incumbents that lost (except 2) DEMOCRATS?

If you actually read (or even skimmed) the article you would see (although I might be assuming a lot) that the article is actually making the argument that the "anti-incumbent" sentiment is being overblown by the media.
