Default Are the french people stupid?

After what happened in greece you would think that it would be easy to pass certain reforms to secure economic stability. The French president proposes that they raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 in an attempt to make sure the pension fund breaks even. Because of this proposal the french people are going nuts. Can they not see that the government can not sustain health care and a pension for everyone now that the baby-boomers are getting ready to retire and now that people are living longer. France could be the next socialist country to bite the economic bullet because the people cant think beyond themselves and there situation. They dont care about anything other than getting what they believe is owed to them and they believe it to be a right. Here is another prime example of the failure of socialism (creating dependence on the government) and unions (demanding more than a country or company can sustain with no foresight). The french people need to get real.

Virtually every state pension system is in a hole right now. It's only a matter of time before you see the same uprisings on shore. When states start making their cuts, it's going to hit existing retirees and their medical benefits too.

It won't be a precedent either. 1000's of US companies have already slashed pension and medical benefits. We're headed on a collision course. Government benefits will be cut as will retiree benefits......we'll all be shelling out any savings you have to cover your costs. Given the increasing life spans, that's going to be for a long long long time too.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Stupid? No. they just have to guts to actually realize that having an idea is worthless without having people actually stand up for what they believe. France has one of the worlds best programs for health care and the people their actually enjoy themselves as well as have mandatory vacation leave every year. Your opinion is just that, an opinion. My bet is that you believe that the Mosque being built in NYC should not be built b/c it's to close to were the WTC towers fell and that you want the government to step in but you also believe that the government shouldn't raise taxes and shouldn't be telling you what to do, especially gun control reform. I would rather us as a nation stand up and and fight for everyone's best interest and have a government destroy itself than to be enslaved by weak people who are put into political office and pass laws that only help ease the minds of the weak. The USA use to be a country of strong ppl that fought for each other and wanted the best not only for their self but for their country. Now the USA is filled with a bunch of weak, politically uneducated ppl that can't stand up for anything.

BTW, I am just stating views like yourself so please don't take anything personal. If in any way I did offend you, it was not meant that way. I only meant to open more debate/dialogue in the matter.

Rogue, I may not agree with everything you say, but I admire your attitude and look forward to reading more of your opinions.

Firstly I wont take anything personal so dont worry.

Now to answer you. Tell me how good that health care system will function when the country has no money to fund it. You can can want to have it all but if you cant pay for it you might have to tweak it a bit. France is going to drown itself in debt if they dont change things, that is a simple fact not an opinion, look at Greece. I would also say that the french people aren't standing up for what is right or what is best for their fellow man. They are standing up for what they want for themselves and nothing more. They get all of this government assistance and they dont want to let it go. Look at the protests now and all that is proposed is raising the retirement age 2 years. They cant sacrifice a few years in order to secure their way of life for future generations. Seems pretty selfish to me. These people cant see beyond their noses and soon those noses will be cut off because of their inability to see past it.

I dont care about the mosque and I want less government, less taxes and I want my guns. I would say that you are a union member afraid to stand on your own to feet and want the government to baby you and take care of you, that is what I gather from your post, let me know if I am wrong. You believe in equality of outcome not opportunity so you are somewhat Marxist. Its cool it takes all kinds and in America you free to be so.

Pretty much the same way we support a military and it's activities we cannot afford, medicare/cal we cannot afford, and SSI we cannot afford. Do you support ending much of what is those as well? You say you want more tax cuts, of the the Bush cuts extended (so do I for purely selfish reasons) but when we are running trillion dollar deficits how exactly are we going to pay for these tax cuts? You say they will pay for themselves? Well they haven't yet so why would they now? If you call for tax cuts without showing a definitive way of paying for them, well..... doesn't that make your views as part of the problem? More deficits without funding?

Please be more specific on how you get what you want without exploding the deficit even further. Let me give you a hint.... anything you would cut, if it doesn't include SSI, the Medi's, and the military, would be like emptying a swimming pool with a tea spoon.

Cutting taxes is proven to provide more tax revenue for the government, raising taxes has the opposite affect. The largest deficit driver is entitlement spending not military, so I would start there. I think the important thing to remember is that we need the military, it is a necessity. Medicare, medicaid and obamacare are not. I would allow people to keep their own SS in private accounts.

I agree that we need some military spending cuts. I would also cut off the pensions of congressmen men or women who serve fewer than 20 years in congress. Most of those people have money and do not need to have health care and a pension from the government anyway.

The underlying fact is that no countries government can support its entire population nor is that the job of government.

There were huge deficits after the Bush tax cuts. How can that be?

So basically you are just like the left - you want to spend crap loads of money on things - you just want it spent on your priorities. Oh, and please save me jargon like "Obamacare" - partisan attack type terms muddies conversations. I don't even vote except locally because I see both sides as mostly the same, so you are not going to convince me either way.

    Now were talking.

We have a 14 digit budget deficit so this sort of thing is akin to the teaspoon and swimming pool.

    Ugly -

We have military bases in countries all over the world. We insist on being the worlds policeman. We partake in nation building. We could easily defend this country, and close the borders, with far less than we already spend. But you know darn well that is not the way it works..... again, it is all about spending money to helps ones district, to get reelected, to keep or get the power. Which is why the parties are the same and the only difference is the emphasis.

I agree with the economic principles in theory, but tax cuts on top of continued high spending will not help the problem. You call them like they are a panacea, and the reality is we had large deficits during the years of the Bush administration, and continue (to say the least) to have deficits with those same cuts still in place during the Obama administration; even including one more tax cut (ironically ridiculed by the right). You prove to me that these cuts are going to help - and do so in real numbers and not partisan politics - and I am all ears. Otherwise continuing to explode the deficit with increased spending, and tax cuts which haven't proved to make up the difference (to say the least) crowds money out of the free market, and hurts rather than helps.
