Thread: Globalization has created a World of serfdom

In order to keep my family from starvation I would (and have) scrub toilets. I would do whatever it took to ensure that my family had wha tthey needed to survive.

But, I see where you're going with this. You're trying to play the emotion card. You want me to feel bad for the guy who worked hard in the past, but caught a bad break or hit a rough spot. As much as I would feel bad for someone in that position, I can not use that to justify violating someone else's freedom. That would make me feel worse.

Its funny that you bring up a situation in which the subject has gone to college for a while, get a masters degree, and work for the same wage as those who don't have high school diplomas. I have been in that spot before. I can tell you that it is not an easy road, but it is something that has to be done.

So, I HONESTLY feel that this guy has caught a bad break, but he still has to do whatever it takes to acheive his goal.

Big, you are free to starve. You are free to work 90 hours per week. You are free to get sick. You are free to watch others starve while you eat. You are free to sell your daughter to the highest bidder. Isn't freedom a wonderful thing? Who would think of questioning freedom?

Big, you are free to starve.

You are also free to do something about it so you don't starve.

You are free to work 90 hours per week.

You are free to reap the benefits of working 90 hrs/wk. You are also free to work less than that and take the benefits that come with that.

You are free to get sick.

You are free to take care of yourself so that you aren't as likely to get sick. If you do get sick, you are free to treat that illness as you wish.

You are free to watch others starve while you eat.

Others are free to find food and you are free to give them whatever of yours you wish. But, they are NOT free to take whatever they wish from those not consenting and you are not free to demand others give their food without their consent.

You are free to sell your daughter to the highest bidder.

Not in this country, my friend.

    Isn't freedom a wonderful thing?

    Yes it is!!

Who would think of questioning freedom?

Only those who will later regret it.

Animal Farm: On our farm, all animals are equal
Skipster: Under capitalism, all people are free

The mention of Animal Farm usually brings up negative connotations for people, for various reasons. If you are tryign to liken capitalism to the socialism in communism, perhaps you could tell me who shouldn't be free under capitalism.

Perhaps you're being sarcastic or perhaps you're not. In any case, you are correct. Under capitalism, EVERYONE is free. If you think that people aren't or shouldn't be free, I'm all ears.

In Animal Farm, one of their rules was that all animals are equal, which was later slightly modified to: some are more equal than others. Your disingenuous invocation of "freedom" reminds me of that. You use the term not to inform, but to propagandize, just as the pigs did, just as George Bush does, whenever he wants to bomb another country.

    skipster,

Your world doesn't work. You are sadly mistaken. What you present is the world of perhaps 10 years, 20, one generation at most. You are very naive and have been either brainwashed or you are just that way by birth.

In you FREE world the few get wealthy perhaps reasonably but their offspring reaps the benefits of wealth without working a day for it. The perpetual so called FREEDOM created generations of those that are born into wealth and those that are not.

By controlling that wealth, the priviled wealthy offspring can set up economic treaties to starve other countries and have their best workers as serfs in wealthy countries.

There is nothing just about that. Freedom when unrestricted is evil likened to crusades or Nazi Germany.

You guys are pretty loose with the name calling with Skipster. Idiot, naive, brainwashed, horse's ass, etc. I could be wrong, but I've not seen Skipster say that freedom cures all ills or results in great happiness for everyone. If I'm reading him correctly, he is saying that it's better to be free than not.

If I say that it's better to live in a free country than a "non-free" country, does that make me an idiot? I'm just trying to find out why you guys are spouting such vitriol at Skipster before I wade into the pool.

I was planning on skipping this thread, because Big seems to be 100% opposed to globalization, and I am just about 100% in favor of it. If there is no middle ground to be reached, then it's a waste of time to engage. It would be similar to talking about rainbows with someone who is color blind.

If someone comes to your house, and tells lies with impunity, for the purpose of propagandizing, he wears out his welcome sooner than later. If you can't smell the bullshit, see a doctor, but don't expect the rest of us to sit around and nod our heads.

If you want to argue for globalization, go for it. But have an argument, rather than pulling from a bag of empty rhetorical slogans like Skipster.
