Re: Globalization has created a World of serfdom
I turned on Charlie Rose last night, and some guy was going on and on about how great globalization was, throwing out obviously unverifiable but authoritive sounding claims like the industrial revolution improved people's standard of living x pct, and that it had gone up now 100% in developing countries. In short, everything about globalization was great, no problem. I thought: this guy is totally full of it.
Turns out it was Lawrence Summers, former president of Harvard. Maybe skipster is Lawrence Summers. They make the same rhetorical claims.

skipster,
I believe economic dictatorship exists. If people are leaving their birth places for no other reason than economic pursuit and a few countries encourage and set up policies to promote this pursuit, then those countries are no better than any political dictator.
Most people DON'T WANT TO LEAVE THEIR COUNTRY. Have you read the article skipster? The people are saying they would starve without migration. Hardly a FREE decision.
These people are serfs of global economy, nothing more! They give up their dignity to accept demeaning jobs to help their families survive in broken domestic economies.

Re: Globalization has created a World of serfdom
Just so we are clear, the migrants are not happy citizens in their own country that just decide to see the world and try their profession elsewhere for a change.
These people are truly leaving their countries to prevent starvation and take jobs in foreign countries that just may end their professional careers forever.
My parents are a good example. My father was a leading engineer in Russia. He is very bad at learning new languages and without good English he really had no chance at a good engineering position in America. He was only 42 when he came to USA. I doubt Reagan thought of people like my father when he ATTEMPTED TO DESTROY EVIL SOVIET EMPIRE. We left Soviet Union when there was basically no food in stores thanks to Western encouraged freedom.

NOT BECAUSE THEY CAN VOTE OR CRITICIZE THE GOVERNMENT!
So what do you have to say for yourself ?

I did read the article, Big, and it says nothing about economic dictatorship, people having to take demeaning jobs, or about whether people want to leave their home country. The article says that some migration is happening and does a lot of speculating, but does little actual news reporting.
Anyhow, that doesn't matter. Those who left their home country CHOSE to leave. No one FORCED them!!! They could have chosen to stay and starve, had they wished. The article only mentioned "starve" once, but it was a subjective judgment with no way to prove its veracity. Besides, when it was used, it was in reference to a family that had no intention of moving anyhow. It was not used in reference as to why someone would have moved. It doesn't prove your point.
The main issue is that "globalization," if such a thing exists, is allowing more freedom and allowing standards of living to increase. This freedom allows someone to work in one area, support himself, and still have enough money to send back to another country to help support people there. That infusion of money into those economies is increasing the standard of living in those areas. The article also said that an emerging trend (whatever that means -- no numbers are cited) is for those who move away to later return, invest in the local economy, build homes, and start busineses.
Back to the "starvation" choice -- the choice is VERY free! They have a choice to deal with conditions in the home country (possibly starvation) or they can leave those conditions. If they are allowed to make that decision without government interference, it's FREE!!! Can you imagine a government that doesn't allow its people to leave, even when they're starving at home, but could make enough to eat, or even prosper, abroad? That would be truly oppressive.
WHy is it such a big deal to you (or anyone else) what these people do, anyway? I don't care if they want to stay in their home countries or if they want to go elsewhere. They are free people and can do what they wish. If they wanted to stay in their home countries, they would find a way to do it. They most certainly don't need my help.

More false assertions about "freedom", straight from the horse's patoot. I don't know anyone else who routinely makes so many false claims in a single message. And it's always the same unsupported lies.

skipster, you are the most ignorant sob I have ever known.
Let me ask you a question I know you probbly will not answer honestly:
How do you feel about going to college for 5-6 years, get your Masters degree in Engineering, work for 20+ years as one of the leading engineers and then, IN ORDER TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY FROM STARVATION, having to move to another country and take a job as a technician, working side by side with people that don't even have high school degrees and be given orders by them. You are in your early 40s and you have no better future in sight. How would YOU feel?
