English is not our official national language and I believe Citizenship test is available in multiple languages.

However, no official language exists at the Federal level.
To become a citizen, if you meet a certain criteria, you have to answer some basic English questions, but many people are excluded from even that requirement.

Don't lose too much sleep over it, most of your tax dollars are wasted in other ways.

What a made for Google Adsense citizenship website? I reference the United States Citizenship and Immigration form for the English requirements of aspiring citizens...

What a list of difficult vocabulary.. http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedoc...ding_vocab.pdf

You could learn the Spanish equivalent in an afternoon of Pimsleur.

...and that test, of course, isn't taken by anyone born here who chooses not to even learn those few vocabulary words.

I don't know for sure if it happens or not, I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen at all but I imagine it's rare. I'm not sure how someone else not speaking english is a waste of your tax dollars. If a kid grows up in Chinatown, for example, and goes to a private chinese language school how are tax dollars wasted?

Even if English was our national language, it wouldn't necessarily mean that everyone would have to speak it. Ireland, for example, has a national language which is only spoken by a small fraction of the population (even though it's required that schools (maybe even private schools) teach it at all levels).

What I remember from my civics class is that English was a requirement for citizenship, but it could be waived for specific cases, such as someone who was advnaced in age and would not be able to learn.
