Default Circular argument?

I was just on the "other site" and Scott Gallan said that using the bible to prove the bible was a circular argument.

Well isnt using science to prove science a circular argument as well or does this only apply to the bible.

This was in a conversation about life on other planets and whether or not they are saved by Christ.

No. First off science does not prove (unless we are talking about math or logic). Science does not presuppose its correctness, it gives us a good reasons to believe something. IE all observed swans are white, therefore we do not expect to see purple swans even though it is conceivable. This is not the same as "swans are not purple because swans are not purple" and definitely not the same as "the bible is the word of god because the bible is the word of god"

Ugly,
I haven't read the post your talking about but I'd imagine Scott was refering to an argument such as "The bible is true because it is the word of God and God's word is always true because the bible says so" which is a circular argument, I can't think of an example of science using this type of argument of the top of my head.

Correctamundo. That's pretty much how it was going over there.

All I will say is that when it comes to faith and religion no matter what it is you have to default to the book that the religion is based. We cant make stuff up that is not biblical because that is hypocracy. Whether it is circular or not that is the only way to go about it. Also like Spider said the steps or evidence that science needs to prove itself or to be proven are not applicable to the Bible or religion.

What people need to realize (both religious people and non) is that as long as you can think for yourself, it's very apparent that religion and science rule different provinces. They only intersect and "conflict" when stupid people force them to because they are too dumb to see it.

Thank you both! Problem solved and we can all live in peace.

(not being sarcastic, this really is the answer)
