Isn't the ultimate purpose of religion to help us all get along with one another on earth? Isn't how we live in actuality more important than what we believe spiritually when determining if we deserve our eternal reward? If God feels otherwise, he makes no sense to me and he can keep his heaven.
As a Father do you hold your Children accountable, do you reward them for failure. The rules you set out for your kids is so that they might have the best outcome in life. God set out rules so that you might have the best outcome in life after death.

Now I can concede that it is possible that all get into heaven if they lived a good life. What constitutes a good life in Gods eyes is different than ours. So if you lived a good life according to you but rejected the rules God has set forth that he believes to be a good life, I am not sure that you can be rewarded for that.

If treating people honestly, fairly and compassionately isn't good enough because I don't go to confession, take communion, or go through the other rituals, then what God considers a good life will never make sense to me and I guess I'm doomed. For me to "believe," it has to make sense to me. I can't just take something on faith.

As I said earlier, you can't make yourself believe something - either you believe it or you don't. I can't believe that there is one true religion or that if there is, following its rituals is as important in getting into heaven as how you treat other people.

I dont think that the rituals of some religions has anything to do with it.

But accepting Jesus as your savior or believing in God/Allah/ etc. does, and I don't think that should make any difference.

No one can live up to what God wants from us and he knows that. That is why he sent his Son to die for our sins and free us from eternal damnnation. Accepting the Lord as your Saviour is the only way to get to Heaven. It is not done by treating others with respect or honesty. Those are benefits that come with the peace of knowing that Jesus is your saviour and trying to help others find Him. Hell is clearly depicted in the Bible and I believe what God says.

With that said, everyone must find their own path and I can not judge others for their beliefs. And I am way too dumb to try and explain God. The best way I could say it to people who try and fathom Him is like this. Remember when you were young and you were told to do something and you didn't understand why. My parents would say "because I said so" and yours probably did too. It wasn't because they didn't want to tell you, they just knew that you were too young to understand. That is why (I believe) we can't understand all of God's works.

Okay, before I go further..... what do you think happens to people who don't go to heaven?

How many people do you suppose will get to heaven; will it just be Christians, certain kinds of Christians, will there be any of other religions, and so forth?

What happens to Spider, me and my kid, and the other non-believers who frequent this board?

Please be open in your assessment? Saying, only God knows is a cop out, and could mean you are not going either.

First, that was fine when I was a kid. I am a grown-up now.

Second, and the one that really keeps me from being able to even attempt to rationalize religion in any way (this is just me mind you)....... there are to many variations of God, often giving entirely contradictorial "because I said so" type rules and regs, to be able to wrap my mind around just one. You have many variations of all the major religions, and what they teach are very different. Even until the 60's, people wouldn't vote for a Catholic (and many Christians still have issues with Catholics), and yet it is the single largest block of religious people in the world.

I dont know what happens to people who dont go to heaven. They could end up in a burning hell next so Sam Kinison or might only be a separation from God and no real suffering beyond what we already experience. I have know way to know. I will guess it is worse than what we have here, a life of complete emptiness, without Love.

Since I am a Christian I of course believe that only Christians go to heaven. I believe everyone has the ability to accept Christ and go to heaven but not all will. I dont believe there is a limit on the number of people who can go.

When it comes to non-believers I obviously believe you dont go to heaven, to believe otherwise would go against my belief. That is not to say that I dont want you to believe or that I dont want you in Heaven. I believe Pen Jillette said that if I believed he was going to he would want me or whoever to tell him relentlessly, even though he did not believe. He said if you knew someone was going to get hit by a bus you should do what you can to prevent it, the same goes for hell. If you choose to deny my help and you walk in front of the bus I cant do much for you and it is not personal. What is personal is that I do want everyone to believe and gain a place in heaven.
