If I were a terrorist planning to infiltrate the military, I'd probably tell them I was some other religion when I signed up, especially if they were going to do extra background checks on muslims.

    Was this guy a terrorist?
I thought he was just a nutjob acting on his own.

It seems impossible to expect that we are going to be able to stop nutjobs from doing crazy things. This guy was a Muslim, but there are crazies of every color. To me it does not make sense to persecute a whole class of people based on one crazy.

However, if there was evidence of a conspiracy to infiltrate the US Army by foriegn terrorists, then maybe extra investigation of certain applicants is warranted.

I thought I read that he worshipped at a mosque who had a radical leader. I think the radical dude even spoke at his mother's funeral. I don't know if he was attached to any terrorist group, but what he did was definitely an act of terror. I would consider Timothy McVeigh a terrorist, too. So are abortion clinic bombers. I don't know why people focus on a single word like terrorist. I also don't think we will ever be able to be 100% sure who is and is not planning a future attack. But at the same time, it would be silly to pretend that muslims aren't trying to destroy us. I think background checks are just the smart play right now.

Background checks for who? Everyone? I'm pretty sure they already do that. Just muslims? again, how do you know who's muslim and who isn't?

I don't know how they could do it, with the millions who are in the military. I just know that it doesn't ever seem to take long to find out about a person's entire life story once they do something like this. Having an arabaic sounding name might spark someone to look further. But that is racial profiling and could never be done. It is just a tough issue.

Agreed quinn the issue sucks and there is no good solution that I could see. As to ODH's comment, I think part of religious fanaticism is that you don't need to be part of, and trained by, a specific organization (such as Al Queda) commit terrorist crimes. If this guy was shooting up an army base because of his religious beliefs, to me, that's Islamic terrorism regardless if he has contact with millitant groups or not.

I'm sure this is already occuring in ways that I'm not aware of, but I wish there would be more widespread condemnation of such acts by Muslim groups. Are political and religous Islamic leaders roundly condemning his actions? Are local mosques publically offering prayers and support to the families of the victims? Such public acts would probably go a long way towards stemming American/Canadian/Christian/whatever hostility against Muslims.

We may be arguing semantics, but if you are acting on your own doing crazy things, you are an unhinged nutjob, think Columbine.
If you have an organization behind you, supporting your violence then you are a terrorist and the US government can work to destroy that network (i.e. war on terrorism).
We can't really go to war against randon nutjobs who end up acting out violently.

Why is this guy any different than the guy who shot up students at VA Tech?
He seems scarier because he is a Muslim and has infiltrated the Army.

I understand that there has been pretty wide-spread condemnation of these attacks by muslim groups, it just isn't getting a lot of coverage:

Reports from witnesses and victims have Nasan yelling praise god or something to that effect in Arabic before he started shooting.

If I were Muslim I and not an extremist I would be disgusted by this act as well just as I am by every Christian nut job that goes bonkers. He is being praised by the extremist factions of Islam.

The only real way to properly attempt to find these terrorists is to profile all middle eastern applicants Muslim or not. I know it is not the best way bu it might be the only way. If the soldiers get the idea that someone is trying to infiltrate and kill them from the inside, they might take matter into their own hands.
