Or maybe it was Time magazine? They have said pretty much the same as BnR, and were able to defend their claims in court, as I understand it.

Defend? Maybe but the court also saw how Eli Lily, one of Time's biggest advertisers actually told J. Walter Thompson, their ad agency, to have Time attack Scientology or have their ad revenues diminish. Not exactly stellar reporting if it is motivated by ad dollars.
Shortly before the article appeared, The Citizens Commission on Human Rights, an arm of the church that investigates mental health fraud & abuse, disclosed enough unflattering data upon Prozac, (Lily's "wonder drug" that caused thousands to attempt to commit or actually commit suicide including Wiesbecker the man who made the phrase "going postal" famous) to cause it's stock prices to plummet.
The people who had a hand in writing that article had their own dirty hands exposed & they didn't like it.
