Assuming its just a handful of people I don't really care.

I do think its ok to talk about these things and keep them in mind when the left tries to make villains out of Wall St fat cats. I recall the time Barny Frank and a few others in congress grilled many of the CEO's. The one for General motors & Chrysler sticks in my mind. They grilled them for flying on a private plane while their companies were in distress. The hypocrysy was that many congress people are flying much bigger private planes during a time our economy is in distress.

Thanks Ugly. This is pretty bad... I realize a small number of them are shared services with the president, but its still a bit much.

They make too much money imo opinion. We need the pay czar to adjust a lot of those salaries.

This doesn't look out of line to me, at all. Drop off the last 6 - they are clerical staff with fancy titles. Of the remaining, 7 are involved in travel and scheduling and events. Three are press related. The remainder are Chief of Staff and Deputy, and various "policy and projects" staff, and one "gofer", the Special Assistant and Personal Aide. The First Lady is responsible for the "social" aspect of the White House. With the constant flow of foreign and domestic dignitaries through Washington, that is a huge responsibility. Plus the First Lady is now responsible for a much higher public presence. Where would you cut?
And who is over-paid? The Chief of Staff at 172K? That is about what a Superintendent of School for a medium-sized school district makes. Sixty to 70K for those various Deputy Directors - the pay of an experienced teacher. You really think that these folks are over-paid for the responsibility they hold? As for those on the bottom of the list - how in h3ll do you survive working at the White House on 36K per year?

Agreed. In line with that is the fact that Michelle Obams's staff closely mirrors Laura Bush's. I guess the uproar is for the 4 extra gov't employees making a whopping 50k a year each.

"Lelyveld said that Michelle Obama?s staff was actually no different than that of her predecessor, Laura Bush. "[W]e have exactly the same staff number as Mrs. Bush and our office organization reflects a similar staffing model, so insinuations otherwise are wrong," she said. Lelyveld said that the White House?s "personnel records indicate" that there were 24 staffers for Laura Bush at some point. We were able to verify at least 18 staffers for Laura Bush, as of June 30, 2008, via the 2008 White House staff list published in The Washington Post?s White House Watch column. Sixteen people were specifically referred to as a "first lady" staffer, and Amy Zantzinger and Dorothy Thornton served as White House social secretary and deputy social secretary, respectively. It?s possible that someone with the title of "staff assistant" was assigned to the Office of First Lady as well, as is the case with Michelle Obama?s staff.

The combined annual salaries for the 22 staffers we can specifically identify as working for Michelle Obama come to $1.6 million. For the 18 we could identify as working for Laura Bush in 2008, the total is $1.4 million."

I stated earlier in this thread that I knew that former first ladies had staffs like this. I was wondering why any of them needed them not just Obamas. It just happens that they wrote an article about Obamas.

The point is we all need to be aware of these salaries the next time the government lectures us to make sacrifices. I don't care what Laura Bush or Hillary Clinton had. Its not what the framers of our constitution had in mind. I thought she had maybe 4 to 5 employees. All these deputy positions are overpaid imo. If we had to make tough decisions, we would have the first lady with 3 employees, a publicist, a planner, and a make up artist. Everything else should be a shared service with the president. But of course, I am thinking too darn efficiently for a government office.

Hey, make that 4 employees. I could be the lean management directer. Give me $140,000k and I'll save the country 2x my salary.

That in a nutshell is why no one believes that a government run healthcare system would save any money. Government is always overstaffed and government is always underproducing. If government agencies had the same productivity standards for their employees as most private companies, most would be able to cut their staff by 50%.
