    Default Nobel Peace Prize

Did any one see this coming? Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize!!

I hadn't given the peace prize any thought, but if I had to pick someone, it would probably the Zimbabwean Morgan Tsvangirai who wa sone of the nominees according to the BBC article.

Not sure why they'd ask a Taliban spokesperson what they thought of Obama winning the prize, but he had predictably snarky response: "The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won the 'Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians".

Wow this award is becoming a joke!!! Obama hasn't done anything to deserve such an Award. Maybe I am wrong and looking through my conservative lenses but can someone please tell me what he has accomplished or tried to do to win this award?

What a joke - an effort by Europeans to influence American policy (encourage Obama to leave Iran alone).

Barack Obama was nominated for the award in February 2009, just two weeks into his presidency. The voting occurred in June, just four months into the Obama era.

According to this article Obama was awarded based on his beliefs rather than his achievements- beliefs on diplomacy, cooperation, nuclear disarmament and the furthering of democracy. The BBC agknowledges the choice is controversial given Obama's short tenure as president and lack of concrete peace-furthering achievements.

IMO opinion the biggest thing Obama has done is to improve America's image in the the international community, and image that was quite poor after George Bush. This is a noteworthy achievement, perhaps more noticable to non-Americans like myself.

However I don't think the leader of a country which is waging two wars is necessarily the best choice for a Peace Prize. He'd have had plenty of time to win later on;a man who actually risked his life trying to bring democracy and human rights to a hell-hole like Zimbabwe is more deserving IMO. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Tsangari

I don't really care that much.

I'm much more interested in listening to the far fringe of each side of the political spectrum here go batshit about it, than the fact that he won the award.

I was thinking the same. He really doesn't deserve it (and basically said as much,) but at the end of the day it means very little, and watching ensuing meltdowns that are set to occur any minute will be high humor.

Get this the voting for this prize took place in February, 11 days after he took office.

"..in his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."
