Default Obama School Speech Text Released

Every single one of you has something you?re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That?s the opportunity an education can provide.
This is one of many high points from what in my opinion looks like its going to be a fantastic speech.

Reading through the actual text of the speech and then going back and looking at the first edition of the lesson plans that were sent out, the supposedly "controversial" topics that were included look even more innocuous than they already did.

my wife is a teacher and she has recieved calls from parents asking that their children not listen to it.

People are so misinformed and stubborn it is disrespectful. There isn't an ounce of a political message in this, just a positive message intended to help inspire young people. He is the leader of our country. There needs to be some respect for his position.

The only controversy is the lies that have been distributed by the right wingers to scare people who don't know better.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

That is a damn good speech, and it would be silly for anyone to oppose it- especially right wingers (the right wing believes in personal responsibility and hard work as a road to sucess, no?) In fact, I think I'm going to print it out and give it to my (non-American) class at some point.

I feel sorry for the kids of parents who are so closed minded to the idea that Obama could have a positive influence on anything, that they're telling their kids not to listen to the President.

The message is one of self-responsibility and hard work. Why is that such a horrible thing to tell a child?

Thats fine and all but most of the dissent has been before the transcript of the message was released. It makes sense for parents to be cautious. I would bet my left arm that if Bush had done the same thing Parents that opposed him would have been acting this way.

My daughter is excited about the speech, I am fine with her listening to it. If she comes home and starts telling me why we need government heath care that would upset me a bit, but then I would explain our POV to her. If he sticks to the script then more power to him.

    Ugly,

There are people today claiming that they don't want their kids to listen to it. This is AFTER the speech was released. I had a talk with a co-worker who is a self proclaimed right winger. She instructed her kids not to listen to the speech. When I asked why, she said that she didn't want her kids to be "indoctrinated". When I asked if she'd read the speech, she said, "no". How is that making an informed decision? What does that teach her children? I thank God every day that my parents were independent voters and independent thinkers who stressed educating yourself about anything before forming an opinion.

I don't remember, because I was in school, but did parents keep their kids out of school when George H W Bush and Ronald Reagan gave their speeches to the school children?

I agree it looks like it is going to be a good speech. Like I said before if it can help one student then i don't have a problem with it. They came out after and said the contraversial portion of the "suggested" lesson was a typo.....could be, who knows.

In regards to the Bush speach....here is a good piece:

Bush couldn't put two coherent sentences together and that probably explains his reluctance to inspire young people.

Government healthcare? Medicare? VA Hospitals? Damn ugly, you are a fox news talking point in action. Try to think for yourself and maybe you'll see the light of day.

I hope your left arm is still attached. Tough to wrestle with one arm.

Wrong Bush. He's referencing G.W.H. Bush.

Chance - I've read about the petty investigation into use of tax dollars for the speach, etc. It was petty then and it's petty now. What surprises me these days are the number of people who would rather keep their kid home from school, than have them listen to a stay in school and study hard speech by The President of The United States of America.

Back when the dems did this, most of the populace was smart enough to see it as grand standing. These days, the populace isn't so bright.
