The first Bush and Reagan did give speeches to kids starting school, and there wasn't an uproar like this.

I will welcome any president that wants to encourage kids to stay in school to motivate then.

I don't know if I would like them talking about politics....but then again:

It might be a good lesson plan to have students listen Obama and then opposing views and have them have a debate or write a paper on their position after studying both views. Of course this would be for HS students most likely and would require a teacher to be completely nuetral (which can be difficult). I had a great government teacher when I was In HS who refused to tell us who he was voting for...he said it was his job to teach us both sides but our job to decide who we agree with more. He didn't want his opinion to sway ours in anyway.

    A little off topic

Chance I agree with you in general, but I'd hate to see what an opposing viewpoint to Obama's school speech looks like. "Students, I want you to be lazy and fail so that you screw your country over"?

Bingo! Exact position we took at our staff meeting this week when we had to address whether to show the speech. Still, to appease the few vocal parents we could not show the speech live but instead will do it tomorrow after a mass phone call/email has went out to inform all parents.

I could not disagree more. If teachers want Parents to support them and take an active role in education that includes vetting what is taught. There is no way that I as a father would just sit back and let whatever be taught to my kids. If I dont like it I will speak up and get other parents to speak up and change what needs to be changed. If a teacher chose to have a KKK member speak at my kids school I would not be all right with that, if they read books that glorified abortion or other issues I would challenge the school on it. Bottom line is parents have a hand in a child's education and part of that is what is taught, within reason of course.

I think your KKK point is a bit over the top. Barack Obama is our President, does he not have a right to speak with the people of his country? Would you have it so that he never spoke about anything?
