TheRick - I agree I actually think it is an honor for a child to hear from any president. I didn't like the "suggested activities" they had before they either changed them or clarified them but hearing from the president is a good thing. You will get people out there that think Obama can do nothing right just like people thought the same thing about Bush 2. I am very much opposed to the view Obama has for this country but to me that(his policies) has nothing to do with speaking to kids and trying to motivate them to try hard in school. People need to chill out and relax sometimes...politicians from both parties can do good things outside of pushing their agenda.

I must really suck as a parent if I need the President to tell my kids to do well.

Yep, nobody else should have an influence on children other than their parents. Not teachers, not coaches, not mentors, not church leaders. The only influence your kids should ever have are parents.

    Good one.

I'm sure everyone has loving caring parents in this world too. Everyone has a mom and dad they can look up to for advice. Where are you living dude? Everyone has parents that care right? Dude, you should come where I work where a kid is in a hospital for 6 months and the parent who lives an hour away visits once. This is the rule more than the exception where I work too. Broken homes, abused sexually, physically, emotionally.

Obama has said that it is ideal for parents to be role models. But surely you understand that that is not always possible.

God forbid someone that kids might look up to other than parents have an influence on children.

youre right, kids without positive parental role models should have someone to look up to, hopefully it is by choice and not because their school turned on the tv or computer and told them to listen to this all important message from the leader.

Amen Chase. Not sure what to add (except I'm probably less opposed to Obama's plans then you).

I found it interesting that Obama appears ot see sucess as a responsibility towards country and society, rather than a simple case of self preservation- do well to serve your country, not just to make money. A message good for kids to hear.

"do well to serve your country"

JFK said something like that in his first speech as president.

It appears that Laura Bush and Newt G. came out for the President on this issue. Think that some talk show hosts will feel properly chastised?

    Didn't think so.

This is simply another issue that the repubs have completely bollocksed up. It's further evidence that they are out of touch with most Americans.

It's not a coincidence that they have been put out to pasture. Open mouth, insert foot.

Interesting to note a situation here in suburban Cincinnati...

According to news reports, the Lakota school district -- one of the largest in Ohio, rather affluent and fast-growing, and one that has turned out some good wrestlers BTW -- told teachers NOT to show the President's speech live in class on Tuesday. The administration said the speech would be archived, and, if teachers could show that presenting it in class would tie in directly with lesson plans, they could get a copy of it from their particular school's resource center.

By contrast, when President George W Bush came to Voice of America Park (in the school district) for a campaign stop in 2004, Lakota schools were dismissed, and the two high schools' marching bands, cheerleaders and choirs were bussed to the site to entertain (requiring 19 buses).

It seems like a double standard to me.

If I were making the decision, I would err on the side of letting students see the President, whether in person at a campaign stop... or on TV in the classroom. To see the President -- whoever that is -- is important. I remember seeing Richard Nixon's inauguration on TV while in fifth grade class... and, from what I remember, 1969 was a time even more divisive than today.

Parents don't get to choose what is presented in school, whether it's evolution in science class, a controversial book in English class, a concert, a play, a guest speaker, or the President on tv. That is the job of the Board of Education, in whom parents trust to make the right decisions. If parents don't like what their kids see and hear in schoool (or even if they do), they should discuss is with their kids at home and express their opinions. If they don't agree with a Board of Education decision, there are ways to deal with them. Sheltering kids from the free expression of thoughts is not the way to further their education, recognizing that there are reasonable limits.
