Personally, I have no problem with the speech itself, but the descriptions of the "guided discussion"/lesson plans I definitely do NOT like. Of course, that problem is easily solved in individual classrooms-don't follow them. What do you guys think overall?

I think giving the speach is a great idea....hell if it can help a couple kids. However, i agree i didn't like the "suggested activities" that went a long with it. Notice they changed after people spoke up about it. |

The right wing would attack Obama if he farted in church. The bigoted right is freaking out that they are meaningless. The right's mental illnesses are just what the democrats need to stay in power in perpetuity. |

No problem with the concept of the speech nor with the activities now that the actual content of the speech is a little clearer. Smarter thing to do probably would have been to keep the activities a little close to the vest until after the speech had been given. |

What Zapp said. I don't think the questions are particularly malicious, they seem like pretty basic reading comprehension stuff, that kids would do as part of an everyday English curriculum, but as a teacher I'd rather have my own discussion.

I agree. The lesson plan afterwards is just a suggestive one. And, according to the Dep't of Ed., there are going to be no political discussions, only discussions of staying in school, studying, etc . . . In addition, Pres. Bush and Reagan both gave speeches directly to students. Pres. Bush was criticized by Democrats for misusing taxpayer money, so the left's hands are not clean on this issue either. Reagan even mentioned political issues during the speech, including gun control and the line-item veto. So, the right is being a bunch of hypocritical punks, but the Dems need to understand that they have pulled this card before. http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmi..._students.html Everyone (Dems and Repubs) need to chill out. I think it is great when a Pres. (Dem or Repub) speaks to kids, as long as the speech is focused on educational issues. By the way, I highly doubt Pres. Obama will discuss political issues; I don't think he wants to get into the intricacies of health care reform with students
