The major difference here being that NK has missiles and other sophisticated weapons and delivery systems -not a 'dirty bomb' scenario-but the power to remove a large portion of the population of Earth to elsewhere -be it heaven, hell ,paradise or Valhalla.
The one just barely bright spot in this scenario is that NK's missles are short range. They could reach Japan, and certainly South Korea. After which I would suspect that NK would become a glassy parking lot.

My suggestion is along the lines of Ground & Pounds - but I would let the Israelis do the work. They tend to worry less about world opinion and political nicities.

Mr. Payton - you stated earlier that Chinese MIGs shot down more American aircraft than anyone but the Germans. Do you have a source for this? I am not challenging it, per se, but would have thought that the Japanese would hold that distinction. The pilots that I have talked to who fought in Korea were not impressed with the Chinese and/or the NK pilots.

IF America, or Isreal, knows exactly where North Korea's missile silos and so on are and IF they are capable of sending smart bombers in there and taking them out without starting a full scale war, then I agree that they should do so.

    N. Korea may have the 4th largest military in the world, but the country is living in the stone age. Most of their military technology is out-dated and they don't have the economy to sustain themselves during a long war. I guarantee that they would be crushed if they invaded S. Korea. The fact that we have 38,000 troops over there would make it even more ugly for them.

We would definitely suffer a large number of casualties though, since we have so many troops near the border.

The fact that Soul is within missile range would also make a difference. You cant just say that they would be crushed. They have weapons and personnel who would never surrender. Add to that they are already there, they have no logistical issues in regards to troop movement like we do.

Even if NK miraculously pulled off a surprise invasion and took Seoul and other parts of SK, they rest of the world wouldn't say "ok, you win, South Korea is yours".

It might take some time, but Kim Jong and his army would be crushed by the rest of the world. (Assuming China goes along.)

Again, I see the real threat as NK's nuclear technology making its way into the hands of terrorists.

Right assuming China was on our side and Russia was on our side. If either went for NK and assisted them in anyway it would be a long process. Don't forget Iran might want some of that action if they thought we were in a position of weakness.

There is no way I repeat no way to predict a crushing defeat for the North Koreans. It also is not a matter of if they can hit Seoul it is a matter of how much damage and civilian life would be lost when they started lobbing missiles into it. We should have stomped them the first time and we didn't. I dont see any reason why we would this time. Don't forget that we are also engaged in two other conflicts. I dont think the multi front war tactic has ever worked out for anyone ask Hitler.

    What about a coup?

Does anyone benefit from Kim Jong being in power? I'd imagine even China would rather have a more stable government in NK.

I wouldn't be surprised if history unfolds this way.

I'm thinking something like the end of The Godfather I, when all the top brass simultaneously get eliminated.

No doubt N. Korea would inflict a lot of damage and there would be many deaths, including for U.S. troops. The word "crush" is open to interpretation, so I'm not going to argue about it, so I'll modify my wording to "lose". N. Korea would have no chance of being able to occupy S. Korea permanently if they did invade. They may even have some success at the beginning of the war, but would be doomed in the end. And this is if the U.S. didn't help, which we would. It would be a suicide mission for Kim Jong Il.
