I watched a History Channel show on him and learned things I did not know and I now believe that George Washington was the greatest American ever.

He led the military and won the war for our independence and at the end of the war he kept the American officers from turning on the new Government for owed pay and other promises the Gov. made. He insisted on a President that had a limited term and not a monarch. He did not want to be President but did so because he recognised the need of the country and put it before his own.

So what do you all think?

Always the negative with you big. Just a little hint, everyone has some issues. Slavery was perfectly legal then, not saying it was right but it was not viewed as an evil yet.

Musta been the special on the American Revolution. His strategic convergence of all troops into eastern Virgnia to entrap and then sack Conwallis was sheer genius, apart from Conwallis leaving himself open to being obliterated.

Clearly leading the rebellion into a revolution and aligning all of the egos to remain united as a single country was no small undertaking.

Yes, Washington, Lincoln and I believe FD Roosevelt belong among the top three. Each conquered national strife and led the country in time of dire war. Add resolving the Depression to Roosevelt' accomplishments.

I watched those same history channel programs, Very good stuff. Incidently how about Ben Franklin and how he handled the French?

He might be on the short list of greatest American non-presidents.

Edit. I had to laugh when it occured to me that Franklin (allegedly) sired a bunch of illegitimate children. Anyone have the count on that?
