I watched those same history channel programs, Very good stuff. Incidently how about Ben Franklin and how he handled the French?

He might be on the short list of greatest American non-presidents.

Edit. I had to laugh when it occured to me that Franklin (allegedly) sired a bunch of illegitimate children. Anyone have the count on that?

    Greatest American something.........

Old news to the history buff. Also, probably why he was even more esteemed in Europe than the Colonies. They didn't really care about such things, and took him for what he was. The colonies were a bit more conservative about such things and would judge accordingly.

When washington beacme president there wasnt even a national currency and the currency they used during the war lost all value after it.

    Apples and oranges.

In Washingtons time it was still very much a merchantile exchange system. You got loans, and credit based on the credibility of your economies ability to deliver. The only thing the United States need to do was obtain credibility, to get credit within the system of the time. When we got a Constitution, a few years of survival, and a perceived King (Washington), then things looked up.

Roosevelt had to tread water in what was basically a broke economic system and give a brutalized populus hope, and something to do. It defined people from that era who never got over the paranoia of "doing without". My grandparents never felt comfortable and always did what they could to "stock up". I suspect you are familiar with that mindset with your family.

In the final year of the war, Franklin printed up over $290,000,000 (yup, millions) in continental currency supposedly backed by spanish silver. There was no Spanish silver to back it up. Accept for the fact that Franklin was authorized by the continental congress to do so, it was all bogus. By the end of the war a pound of butter cost $6.

The British tried to disrupt the US economy by floating counterfeit currency. It had no affect since all of the US currency was near bogus already.

Others tried to counterfeit the currency also, but Franklin developed unique ways to validate the real bogus notes. He added silver flakes to the ink. Also, the decorative patterns, while sending specific messages, were hard to duplicate because the intricate leaf vein patterns were printed from real flowers.

Apparently Ben Franklin could perform on a mat as well (I wonder if he was better on top or on the bottom?).

But could Roosevelt gotten us out of the depression wothout the war? I am not trying to take anything away from FDR I think he is a top 5 president for sure. I just think Washington had it a little harder, also take into consideration the lack of cooperation from the states to ratify a constitution that gave power to a central form of government.

    Scott,

I am more than familiar with the "stock up" mind set. My family moved to AZ after the depression and dust bowl in Oklahoma. We spent most of late summer canning food. Not to the extreme of the Mormons though, sevens years worth is a bit extreme.
