And ideas on how to keep people interested throughout the season?

Last year, many teams quit playing because they lost a starter and couldn't find anyone in the free agent pool to replace them. 14 teams last year was WAY too many. If everyone has some sort of competitive edge, they will be more likely to keep playing.
I am also thinking of expanding the play-offs to 6 or 8 teams, so more people have a chance in the end.
Also, I am going to do something different with the draft. Going in reverse order of how you finished last year you will get to pick the spot in the draft you want to pick at. Everyone doesn't think the #1 pick is the best, so I'll let the person determine what pick they have. If someone new joins they will get put in the middle of the pack of the picking order.

One thing - it is much better if everyone (or almost everyone) can live draft, instead of going on autodraft. Autodrafting can totally F-up draft strategy, because a team on Autodraft might end up taking two top QBs in a row, instead of drafting like a sane person. Last year, it seemed like there were five or six autodrafters, and it resulted in a screwy draft. Just my opinion though.
I'm on the west coast, so I'd prefer a draft that starts no earlier than 6 pm west coast time. If that won't work, then I'd like it to be around lunch time west coast time, so I could draft at work. If neither of those options work, I'll try to juggle my schedule around.
Edit: I just noticed that the draft is scheduled for Sunday morning. That'll work.
