Knowing your posting habits, you've been unemployed for at least 5 years now. What's the deal Big? Are you an agoraphobic? Or just lazy??
Wow, two embarrasing options. No positive option to choose from? How about rents and mortgages suck and I have better things on which to expand my energy right now?
Ours runs about $100 per month, until summer. Last month was $170 - we had some really hot weather (100 plus highs) and the utility co charges more in the summer. Also, all three daughters were home so the laundry, lights, etc. needs were greater. Probably the two biggest electric drains in our home are the air conditioning and the pool pump. We figure the AC costs us about a buck a day to run. $400 seems awfully high. Maybe you need to turn off the grow-lights in the basement.
It depends on the size of the house. Our bill is around $400 but we have a big house and we live in an area with fairly high electric rates.
Our house is 4000 sf under air and we live in a HOT climate. Four of us are home every day in the summer and we run the AC at 76 plus a pool. There are pool towels to wash, football gear to wash and it rains every afternoon so the kids are inside for quite a while every day.

I guy i work with switch his house over to solar power lsat year (cost $65,000). He lives in 5,000 + sq home with a pool in southern california. With the energy conservation going on here, he received a check back from the electric company. He did not pay an electric bill for the entire year (receiving statements with $0.00 balance), after the year was up he investigated the entire situation and the energy company explained how they had been harnessing his energy that he was not using and sending to other places. He told them that they should have asked and that he was going to have his lawyer look into the situation. The energy company sent him a check for the year in the amount of $3,600 dollars. He smiled and realized his investment was a good one. The energy company still draws his left over power and he still gets paid for it, but only once per year do they settle.
Learning Lesson-Switch to Solar Power in California
I know a couple of people with alternative energy systems (two solar, one wind) who receive monthly checks. Don't know what the difference would be. We have looked into solar for our house - problem is the break-even point is about 20 to 25 years down the road, without figuring in maintenence. I suppose it would be a wash, if I was paying for it over 20 years - with no interest - but no one seems to want to give me that kind of home-improvement loan. We will (probably within the next two years) put in solar heating for the pool. Actually, we have solar heating now - the sun shines on the pool and it warms up enough to swim by late May. With panels and a pump we could probably use the pool from April to November or December.
