And, more importantly, it changes the game - situations are different, use of players is different, decision-making is different (both for managers and on-field players), etc.

Tournaments Joined: 0 Tournament Wins: 0 | Re: Donny Baseball vs Mex Let's be even more accurate...he was CO-MVP. He hit 11 HRs that year and drove in 105, the only season in his entire career he had more than 100 RBI. Also the only year his SLG was over .500.
On the other hand, Mattingly was a true MVP, sharing the award with no one else. Thus, considered the BEST player. Not one of the very best.
From 84-87, Mattingly averaged roughly 30 HRs and over 120 RBI, with a post-.500 SLG in each of those seasons. Also, he was a 9X Gold Glove winner, so the gap in fielding isn't as large as the gap in hitting.
In each player's prime:
Hernandez was a 3rd in the lineup guy. High OBP, low power for a 1b. As mentioned one of the best, if not the very best, fielders at 1b ever. 11X Gold Glove.
Mattingly was a true cleanup hitter, hitting for high average and high slugging percentage. Lots of runs accounted for, struck out less than Hernandez. 9X Gold Glove in a shorter career hurt badly by injury.
