General comments and explanations for these questions.

    1. Clutch or Automatic

It seems it's much harder to find a clutch these days. When I took driver's ed way back in the 70s, they didn't even teach us the clutch. My very first vehicle was three on the floor. I didn’t know how, but just drove it to the next town (10 miles away) and by the time I got back, had it pretty much figured out.

    2. Cruise Control or no?

This used to be option on cars. Now it is standard. I always wonder if the guy who won't get out of the fast lane on the interstate (inching by a slower car, or not at all) is on cruise control.

    3. Beer, or Wine, or nothing at all?

Was listening to Garrrison Keillor this past weekend and he asked the beer drinkers and the wine drinkers in the audience to respond and somewhat to my surprise the winos, er wine drinkers, were much louder (evidently in greater number).

Thanks to Homerdindon, who has told us neophytes, finally, the proper way to drink beer—asfastaspossible!

    4. Uses cell phone?

I somehow knew I was the only one who didn't have one. Related to latest gadget question (#18).

    5. Driver or Passenger?

My ex- has never had a license.

    6. Number of TVs in use at home.

It seems like I was surprised the first time I met someone who had one in their bedroom. Still astonished at the number in use. I guess they’re not that expensive though.

I admire people who go completely without (we have one here), but they are in pretty small number.

    7. Cable/Satellite TV or no?

    I have cable but what a rip-off.

    8. Plays golf?

I usually equate this with someone who has money, but know that’s not necessarily true.

    9. Plays tennis?

This sport too has its share of hoity-toities, but anyone whose body hasn’t broken down can play at any age, and it can be a tremendous workout if you know how to keep the ball in play. I prefer racquetball too, but that is not nearly as accessible.

    10. Primary source of news: newspaper, TV, radio, internet, other?

    Just curious.

    11. (For those who do) Reads newspaper most often on-line or in print?

I read somewhere recently (or maybe saw this on TV) where someone said that people under 30 all get their news on-line and don’t read print. I wonder if this is true.

    12. Works Out with electronic device on head or without?

Back in the day, when these first came out, we were forbidden from wearing these while walking or running on Camp Pendleton. It made sense to me then. It still makes sense to me now. But you see them everywhere.

    13. Watches Saturday morning cartoons (not because of kids).

Over the years, I’ve met a surprising number of adults (say roommates at a business or military conference) who turn on the TV and find the cartoon channel in the morning. My former sister in law was still watching cartoons last I knew and she probably still does.

    14. Drinks Soda Pop?

I cut the cord a number of years ago. There seems to be some sort of addictive quality to it because I can’t think of any rational reason why anyone would ever drink this stuff (except for something to have on a very hot day). When I used to drink pop, I had to have at least one everyday. I’ve known people who drink 20 cans a day.

    15. Drinks Milk?

Drank it as a kid and up to early 20s but don’t remember ever really liking it (not past a very young stage anyway). Some people cannot tolerate it.

    16. Drinks Coffee or Tea?

When I was a kid, these were considered adult beverages (except iced tea).

    17. Voted in any election in past year?

    Just checking.

    18. Prefers buying newest gadget first, at the same time as everyone else, or later if at all

I’ve just noticed certain people like to be the first ones to get new devices: palm pilots, blackberries, ipods, etc. Others go with the crowd, and yet others resist to the bitter end (how many in the pre-baby boomer generations still don’t have a computer but could afford one?).

I’m not saying one way is better than another, but here’s one particular type of “firster” you might recognize (note: contains some foul language). It kills me (laughter) every time I read this because the guy “profiled” here is a composite of people I’ve known:

Print, can't take a computer into the john.
That is why they invented laptop computers and wireless internet connections.
I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Yeah, but they haven't yet figured out how to make a laptop you can leave behind in the john--which is why I suspect hardcore newspaper "readers" are sticking to what they have.
