It happens all of the time - if you're not going to pay someone to be on your team, then you take the risk. Teams always have to make decisions on whether to pay an old vet to back someone up, or to release him. If Favre isn't good enough to beat out Rodgers, then the Pack can pay him to sit on the bench, or let him go.
Being a Gm isn't as easy as it seems on the internet I guess.
How about if you don't know who the better player for your team is, (number 1 has been stinking it up in big games and now he's number 2) and you need more time to figure it out?
I seem to remember New England winning a Super Bowl a few years back with their back up QB in there and their long time starter on the side lines holding a clip board. New England didn't just cut the starter, they let the season ride and figured out they would take the back up and let the starter go.
Buffalo made a playoff run with Frank Reich and reached the Super Bowl as a result. The starter came back and promptly got blown out by Dallas 52-17. It's not as easy as this guy is number 1 so lets dump number 2. It's the NFL, you need time to figure things out some times.
Hostettler won a Super Bowl in New York (don't know if any of you follow the Giants) with Simms on the bench.
This isn't the first time the starter lost his job and now he has to sit while the team evaluates how the new starter is doing.
I say Favre holds the damn clip board like any other employee would and shuts his mouth until he's proven that he's the better fit for the team. Otherwise stay retired, 16 years was plenty for me to see of the guy.

I dunno, you tell me.
My position is that's it's not. Give it some more thought, I'm sure you'll agree
Difficult to tell what exactly they are planning to do, some say it's a bluff. I saw Bret on the news last night saying he may call their bluff by showing up to camp. God forbid Bret not get special treatment and he have to hold the clip board. You would think that being a grown man with a wife and kids, he'd already have learned the lessons of humility and team work. Guess Bret missed the boat on that one.
