"say Nifiong truly believed by doing whatever unethical things he did was the only way he could get to the truth and the truth was more important than the damage of his unethical behavior"
-Nifong cared about getting re-elected, the truth wasn't even on his radar.

Great posts NBT, Sully, and Spider who has really been absolutely nailing it through out the thread. Nifong got exactly what he deserved. As said, the guilt or innocence (although it was painfully obvious early on that the three guys were innocent of everything they were accused of) wasn't the point, Nifong's dishonest and unethical behavior is what got him deservedly dumped.
What would you all say if behind the scenes Nifong and the stripper are extremely happy since both were paid off well to go away like this?
What would you say if behind the scenes the stripper is really an alien who was employed by other aliens in power on campus of Virginia, who was sent to disrupt the Duke season and help deliver an NCAA title to the Cavaliers?

-They might appear to be innocent of most of what they were accused of, but they are most likely guilty of other stuff (underage drinking, providing alchol to minors, etc)

I can't believe college students were underage drinking! What is this world coming to?

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.
The other part of this story, which only Big touches on, is the class, gender, and race issues. It was another case similar to Anita Hill hearings (for those old enough to remember). In my view, you can't take that context out of the story (although many do). I'm sure the comments heard might be a little different in a forum of black people in Durham NC than on this forum. But those comments are largely unheard.
It's not like this is the first case of prosecutorial misconduct. Why was this particular one sooo important?

Any case of prosecutorial misconduct is important. Perhaps this one is recieving so much attention is because people like Al Sharpton helped cast the original case into the national spotlight.

I live in Durham and I can say that the comments on this forum do pretty much represent the comments heard around here.
There will likely always be strained relationships in Durham between the almost 50% black population and the students at Duke. You put a school like that right in the middle of a poor section of town, build a stone wall around it, and that is automatically going to generate some bad feelings. Many students at Duke have always had the attitude that they are better than the community they are surrounded by.
So yes, that's the bottom line of how the whole "incident" erupted into flames so quickly, there was so much underlying tension already in the area that had existed for years, and this thing put it all into the public eye and caused the explosion.
But the bottom line is that Nifong was wrong, and there aren't many people, black or white, that still support him. To suggest otherwise implies that the people of Durham are ignorant of the truth in this case. I didn't see a whole lot of "pro-Nifong" demonstrations outside the courthouse.
