Default A Whale of a Tale

BOSTON - A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt — more than a century ago. Embedded deep under its blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.

I had no idea whales could live to be 200 years old. No wonder there were so many of the around back in the 1700-1800's.

I didn't know they lived so long either, although it wouldnt' surprise me that that detail was in Moby Dick. I'm amazed this whale was harpooned off of Massachusetts in 1890 but was captured today off of Alaska. Now that's traveling around the world.

There is no reason to believe the whale was harpooned off of Massachusetts in 1890. The whale boats of that time had almost driven the whales in the North Atlantic Ocean to extinction so they began to sail around South America and hunted the whales in the Pacific.

Well, I guess I didn't read it carefully. I read that the projectile was made in Mass. and leapt to the conclusion that the whale was speared there. But we don't really know.
