Driving through America would cost a fortune with today's gas prices, hotel fees, food, and stress on my car. Not to mention loans, housing and car payments I still have to earn.
A few years ago we drove from Chicago to northern Louisiana for a family reunion of my husband's family. I hadn't been out of the city for awhile and I was struck (even though I grew up on a farm) by how much of America's economy outside of the city is based on argiculture. Duh. But when you live in the city, it's easy to forget, because you don't see it. Every town had a cotton gin and we saw a lot of cotton mills too. In addition to the cotton fields, a lot of the field were peppers. Now whenever I see a bottle of hotsauce I look at the label. It's always from there.
Everyone needs a new perspective once in awhile, Big.

A change in scenery can give you a fresh attitude and new ideas--a recharging of the batteries so to speak. That sure happened to me when I first went to Europe.
If you haven't seen the plains, with corn taller than you, or the Rocky Mountains, or the Grand Canyon, you really haven't seen America. There's a lot of good food out there too, if you're willing to get off the beaten path.
Big, I thought you were a big picture kind of guy who would naturally see the value in travel.
but those Americans have not chosen to make those other countries their home.
If you have chosen to live your life here, and you have so many problems with the Americans that you are surrounded by... and other people are giving you advice about seeing other parts/cultures of the country, you should keep an open mind and experience other regions of your new homeland.

I'm ready to go! I'd like to do a driving trip of the west coast - LA to Seattle. I might do it in August. I have a very old aunt in LA and my uncle in Washington (who is having his other hip put back in today). It would be a great scenic trip. We should all get out more.

Bonnie, your story of the South reminded me of that part of America too. I remember my grandmother who lived in Mississippi making Hawaiian Punch from the big bottles of concentrate when we were kids, and in that hot weather how nothing tasted so good. Where I first encountered fire ants and armadillos.
