As far as I'm concered, they've never gone out of style, and they've certainly made me smile--40 years later.

At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all (why leave that to music critics?) I'd say Sgt. Pepper is probably McCartney's greatest single contribution to music (and it is enormous). Unfortunately, I think it went to his head.

I wasn't quite old enough (10) in '67 to appreciate the Beatles. But I often imagine what it might have been like to have been of an appreciative age (say college) when a new Beatles record came out. I mean, each one of them must have blown some minds (no reference to drugs) when they first came out. They were such pioneers in their time.

I had the privilege of seeing Paul McCartney in concert a few years ago, and it was great. The Beatles still remain my favorite group of all time, partly because they were so innovative, partly because their music is so diverse, partly because of how much they affected our culture, partly because of how I grew up with them as my soundtrack (others too, of course, but mainly the Beatles), but mostly because they sound great.
