Oh no, its not Karelin or Michael Jordan or Muhammed Ali or Maradonna or Gretsky. Tiger Woods is being debated as the greatest athlete ever on the front page of NY Times.

Jim Thorpe is the greatest American athlete ever IMO.

Golf isn't a sport...sorry Tiger. He might be the greatest golfer in history, however, golf is not a sport anymore than bowling, curling, or pool.

He might be athletic, however, golfers are not athletes since golf is not a sport! ;o)

Actually, I think I would go with Dan O'Brien and Babe Dedrickson Zeharias as the greatest American all-around athletes. I suppose it depends a lot on how you are going to measure greatness, and athleticism. For sheer greatness of athletic ability, I would probably go with Bo Jackson.
With a nod to Big, world-wide I might nominate Andrey Moiseev.

    R.I.P. Cyrano and Roxanne.

Heck, he isn't even the greatest golfer of all time. Put him in a foursome with Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan with a set of old golf balls, unweighted irons and tiny persimmon woods and lets set just how good he really is. Tigger is like the accountant of today using a gigadon computer compared to the accountants of old using ticker tape adding machine. Technology is the player asset of today, not talent.

That's why it's stupid to compare athletes from different eras. Nicklaus dominated when he was on a level playing field with the equipment then and Tiger dominated when he is on a level playing field with equipment now.
