If you're gonna consider Tiger Woods you should consider Roger Federer.. similar dominance (until recently, at least) at a sport requiring physical exertion.

Thank you! I do not know if it is true, but had heard that the Soviet government paid a bonus for each new record - meet, Olympic, world, etc. Alekseyev would wait until everybody was done, then ask for just enough weight to break the record. He set his lifts to maximize the bonus money. A true capitalist!

And those other Golfers aren't using the same technology?

If you want to make this argument, where does it end? What sport? You compare an athlete based on how they did against their peers, and against his peers, it's awfully tough to make a argument that Woods isn't the greatest Golfer of all-time.

And I'm guessing that's what the question really is. Not so much best athlete because he clearly isn't even one of the top 100 athletes in the US right now, it's probably meant to be more of a "most dominant" athlete. And in that argument, he's got a case. So does Roger Federer for that matter, but since I hate Golf and Tennis, I don't really care.

For my money, Bo Jackson is the greatest athlete of all time. Dude was just sick. 4.3 speed, built like a rock, had an absolute cannon in baseball, hit with great power, and was a great running back.

Enough with Bo Jackson already. He didnt have enough longevity. I think he would have been the best back ever if he stayed healthy but he didnt. Plus not a wide enough variety of sport success at a high level for me.

Stop with the Babe D discussion. While she was incredible, she had no real competition. Women did not participate in sports or have the training back then. Many women were forbidden to play sports. So she had a free run of the track so to speak.

Bo Jackson- great but not around long enough. And how could you leave out Deon Sanders (played 2 sports).........LOL

I just can not imagine how anyone could argue against Thorpe. He was sick. But how about we say pre-1950 Thorpe. And 1950 and beyond someone else. Not sure if I can get behind anyone yet. Need more data.

Again, we have to talk about what constitutes "greatest". Are we talking about longevity? Sheer physical skills? What was accomplished? Dominance?
I have a soft spot (no, not in my head) for Modern Pentathlon competitors. Just the sheer variety of skills that must be developed is awesome. Running, swimming, equestrian, fencing, and pistol shooting.
