With a nod to Big, world-wide I might nominate Andrey Moiseev.
Why would you take Dan O'brien over Thorpe when Thorpe also won Olympic gold in the Decathlon plus the Pentathlon and then played thee sports on the collegiate and professional level. He is in the pro-footbal hall of fame and there is a college award named after him and goes to the best defensive back in the nation. I have never seen or heard of anyone in any era being so good at all sports.

Jim Brown. Averaged over 5 yards per carry and over 100 YPG. He was also a very good track, basketball, and lacrosse player.

Many feel that Jim Brown remains the best lacrosse player to don a collegiate uniform. He was THAT good.

I've heard that as well. I have a question......I've heard that the rule change to not allow players to trap the ball between the stick and their bodies was influenced heavily by Jim Brown's dominance. Sorta like the widening of the key in basketball was influenced by Wilt. Do you know if that's true?

I take nothing away from Thorpe - he was truely one of the great athletes of all time. I guess I am succuming to family prejudices - my father (a man who could really carry a hatred) knew Thorpe (although I don't really know how well) and absolutely dispised him.
I guess what so impressed me about O'Brien was his ability to compete at so high a level for so long. Take away the '88 injury and the '92 stupidity and he would have been the run-away favorite for Gold in both of those Olympics. In Atlanta, well past his prime, he finally took the Gold.

Bruce Jenner was way better than O'Brien.

Greatest athlete of all time is Babe and I'm not talking about Ruth.

Bruce Jenner was great - for a gesture he made: Spontaneously wrapping himself in the flag and taking a victory lap. It was one of those moments in sports that lifted the hair on the back of your neck and gave you goosebumps. However, as a decathalete, he didn't compare to O'Brien. O'Brien scored 260 points higher. He also maintained his career over a much longer period of time. Of course, to the best of my knowledge, Jenner never did anything as stupid as pass to the final jump of an event and then not qualify.

Which reminds me - what was the name of that great Soviet weight lifter that always waited to the last lift and would do a new record for his only lift?

I think that it was Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev. Superheavyweight who won 2 olympic golds and set like 80 world lifting records in the 70s. I remember him passing on lifts and then blowing the field away with a record lift. Big would know for sure.
