My wife was the only daughter in a family with 5 boys. I was the only child (adopted). We have three daughters. No grandchildren yet (thank the goddess!). Going back the other direction, my father had 11 siblings, my mother 12. My wife's father was one of 5, her mother one of 4.
Pop had 10, 8 bro's and 2 sis's. Mom had 3 bro's and 3 sis's. All grew up in the same town and knew each other. All have passed on. Can't tell you how many cousins that made for. There is a 35 year spread between the oldest grandchild and me. Pop was the youngest of the brood and I the youngest grandchild. I had one uncle in WWI, a few in WWII as well as a few cousins. All were in the South Pacific in WWII (pop was on the USS Maryland), some went to Korea and a few cousins in Vietnam. All Navy, all survived the Pacific, though 1 was a 7 year POW in the Hanoi Hilton and spent some time with McCain (1x state champ, NCAA A-A, 4th). Another was a test pilot with Yeager, but died in crash during testing for a slot as one of the first astronauts. It's interesting that they never talked about the dark side of service until all of the WWII memorabilia popped up on the tube.
The family reunions were a blast back then, they were actually two family reunions. Oh, the party we had when my cousin finally returned from Nam.
Let's See...Ma's got 8 brothers and a sister, so that's 10, but 9 currently living.
Pop's got a bother. Ma and Pop got 4 kids including myself, with a paltry 5 grandkids (most of them mine). so that is 21 total.
When you get to the 2nd and 3rd generation including my mother's siblings, though, the number gets close to 90-100. Decent sized.
No living grandparents, mother is alive and well, one younger brother who has one daughter, and I have one daughter, no grandchildren. The family name stops here.
My wife had two brothers and has a half sister. I have two brothers. We have one kid. She also has had a dad and step dad. I have had two other stepfathers and a stepmother.
