The whistling tune from "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was addicting!

When we had birds as pets I taught them to whistle that tune. Every morning as soon as they saw me they would greet me with that song.

Sahara (1943)

Seven Samurai (1954)

And I'll have to admit Platoon (1986) was pretty good.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned "The Patriot", which is one of my favorite movies of any genre.

How about war movies that focus on the affect of war on people's lives:

The Deer Hunter 1978
The Killing Fields 1978
Born on the 4th of July 1993
Paths of Glory 1957 (Like Dr. Strangelove, a Kubrick classic)
The Pianist 2002
The Thin Red Line 1998
Birdy 1984

..to name a few...
Oh and one of my all-time faves (though not as good as the book)

For Whom the Bell Tolls 1943

Band of Brothers and We Were Soldiers are great movies and great books!!

If you like Band of Brothers you should read "The Biggest Brother". It is all about Captain Winters and tells his story.

The Great Raid is also a good movie...based off the book "Ghost Soldiers"

The Best Years of Our Lives definitely fits in this category. It is truly an amazing movie with some brilliant performances. If you haven't seen it, it looks at three returning soldiers after WWII, and how they integrate back into society after serving in the war. Try to watch it the next time you see it on cable.

I forgot completely about Deerhunter. That movie is amazing.

Best Years of our Lives - is that the mid 1940s one with Myrna Loy? I think I saw a bit of it on cable once, but couldn't finish watching it. I think its in our local library, I'll have to check on it. Sounds good. The way you described the plot made me think of Coming Home (1978) with Bruce Dern and John Voight.

Yes, that's the one. I only caught the end of it one time. But it's Myrna Loy and Dana Andrews (two great actors--even if he was in some B movies like Hot Rods to Hell and Curse of the Demons), and it has a reputation (consistent with Bluestater's comments) of being a great film.
