It's funny how everyone has superstitions for big games like this. In 1993 when Carolina won NCAAs, my friends and I went to Carmichael Auditorium (where the Heels played before the Smith Center was built) to watch the semifinal game on a big screen. It was a blast, we won (defeating Kansas), so we went back and watched the finals game on Monday.
In 2005, Carolina's last championship season, I was living in Pennsylvania and watched the games by myself in my apartment. Not quite as much fun, but the mojo worked.
So here I am in 2008... back living right outside Chapel Hill. Oh, what to do... what to do... I'm headed to the Smith Center to watch the Heels with 10,000 of my closest friends.
There is a thread on a Carolina message board where people are posting the superstitious things they do during games, it's pretty funny stuff. If anyone is bored, check it out. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=78&F=...1410&t=2310483
All of that also reminds me of an excerpt from a book about Carolina basketball by William Blythe: This book originated when its editor observed the writer curled on the floor in what the editor over the years liked to describe with wicked glee as "a fetal position." The writer was engaged in watching a Duke-North Carolina basketball game. The lineoleum floor was cold and gritty, paper clips were sticking to his cheeks, and the view of the television was not ideal. Perhaps by now, you understand that by positioning himself on the floor in this fashion, the writer had hoped that he might effect a change in the game's outcome. Although such a result may seem unlikely on the face of it, he believed that one day science would prove what he already knew in his heart: that the passionate interventions of fans like himself could alter the course of games.
"You know what I'm thinking," the editor said that night to the writer. He was wearing the nicest leather shoes.
"That I should write about this," the writer said.
"Exactly," the editor said. "And by the way, you have paper clips stuck to your face."
At any rate, the nerves are kicking in. I'm bringing my laptop so if it gets too intense I'll crawl out onto the concourse and watch wrestling videos on youtube!

Oh well, Go Heels! | | |
